My favorite Rachmaninov’s piece. I was 11 when I learnt this. I remember that cozy December evenings, which were spent learning this. It was like the dubbing of the sound of blizzard outside the window. (The winter on the North of Russia was very windy and snowy that year).
One day my window was opened by the wind, when I was playing the final part of this prelude (2:24). Cold snow covered me from head to toe. The window loudly closed when I played the last chord. It was very spectacular.
Since then this piece is associated with the strong Russian winter wind. It opens the windows and lets the snow come into the houses!
