Meshtastic For Dummies AND Heltec V3 Setup for $10

Meshtastic For Dummies, the basics of meshtastic and how to setup your first node. We used a Haltech V3 and show how to set it up and get on my mesh for as low as $10.

Update: prices have definitely gone up since I made this video, but if you hunt around, especially on AliExpress, you can still find good deals on boards.

Tip:  if you’re connecting a board without a screen, the common pairing code is 123456

Meshtastic feels like the spiritual cousin of APRS. It’s “mesh for the rest of us, ” so to speak.

I’m a ham radio guy, but it’s an important distinction that you don’t need a license of any kind to use Meshtastic, and I think that’s awesome.

HAL... Nice. From the Movie 2001 A Space Odessey. Also, for those who don't know HALs name in the movie came from "IBM" shifted back one letter... IBM shifted back in the alphabet by one letter = HAL.

I work up north away from cell towers and wifi. Satellite messengers are trash and cost lots of money. An easy to use system that ten people could use would sell for thousands of dollars. Communication is our number one safety concern and in camp we have 3 radios for 5 teams.

I have 2 heltec v3s and just got a tdeck plus this is a cool hobby to get into for cheap. You're right about the tdeck I have the stock firmware on it I'm waiting on the fancy GUI release thanks for the video I'm from the Windsor Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 area
