There is no worse feeling than approaching a bubble in a poker tournament and having one of the short stacks!

I am joined today by none other than PokerCoaching coach Lexy Gavin! We run through our best tips on how to play a short stack on the bubble and how to give yourself the best chance of making it into the money.

This video will help you navigate your way into finding that min-cash and potentially spinning it up into a tournament win!

Remember to always be aware of the other short stacks in the tournament and find where you place in the overall tournament field. This is a strategy used by every poker professional as they have spent hours studying ICM (Independent Chip Model).

What strategy do you use when you are one of the shortest stacks approaching a bubble?

I think it's important to consider the value of your chips. If 100ppl and 15 cash, with 16 left and average stack is 40BB, and you have 10BB is, so 650BB is out there and 10BB represents 1/65 which means your value is 1.5x the buyin, so goal should be to exceed that. I think math can help. If you fold tens (60% equity) to a shove on the bubble, it probably increases your cashing odds from 60% to 85% (so gain is 1.5* 25%= 0.375 buyins from folding. Offsetting that is the difference in expected results. At 10BB odds of winning is about 1/65, odds double at 20BB. So 60%*2 = 1.2 vs 80%*1= 0.8 not perfect, but I think you pick up 0.4 approx by calling so it's approx ev neutral.

"Without being annoying or excessive" - I think that's the key in rec heavy small-ish stakes. The larger the stakes the more annoying and excessive I'd be, and online I'd just max out whatever time I'm giving.

Premium member…I have bubbled about 8 times. Then I decided it was time to study and find my leaks to avoid the bubble. I studied hard and cashed 3 times in a row. All the bubbles and cashes was in WSOP Circuit Events.

I was in this situation last night in a small mtt bounty. 22 left with 20 in the money, sitting with 12bb. My first piece of advice, is not to panic. Also as Lexi stated, do not pass on premium hands. I had AKs and AKo approaching the money and I got it in pre both times, where my opponents tried to win my bounty both times with 75s and 74o because I was so short. Had I passed on those spots I would not of been able to make the money. Also when sitting with 10-12bb, you are simply trying to make the money, once you get in you can focus back onto chip accumulation.

They'll always be that someone there to call you because you're short stack the reason they go in

All good advice. I usually try to play tight from the shorter stacks as the bubble approaches. The biggest thing is to be aware of who is behind you. You must understand how they will play against you and what size stack they have compared to you.

How can you be sure of where you are at on the bubble? I have 6bb and am the smallest stack at my table. There are 3 other tables do you actually get up and miss a hand to go look at other stack sizes?

well for me i often show my card after i all in after no one call for them to know i only play premium hand
so later you can bluff all in

Jonathan, What’s would be a suggestion you would give a tournament director on the subject.

Why don't tournaments just introduce clocks and timers? If peope have time chips and use them on the bubble fair enough. Otherwise everyone gets 45 sec max or whatever ?

my philosophy is simple: if you are folding really good hands to get in the money, you are playing way too expensive tournament for your bankroll.
