If he had bought bitcoin instead of buying the mining rigs he would have had 0, 227 btc which is now worth $22, 518 which would give him a profit of $17, 518.
But he chose to mine instead so his profit is $12, 030 (btw remember he got a free mining rig).

So yea most of the time you are better off just buying bitcoin.
