Lonely Rolling Star: Katamari Damacy [Electronic and Vocal Cover] | Sab Irene ft. VGR

Here's my video game electronic and vocal cover of Lonely Rolling Star from Katamari Damacy ft. VGR! I'm Sab and I love saxophone and video games, so now I make covers that combine two of my favorite things!

I AM SO HAPPY TO FINALLY RELEASE THIS VIDEO!

I have been working on this cover since January and the finished product is better than I could have imagined. I met VGR at MAGFest this year, which was so much fun! We didn’t know each other, so it was nice to meet first, then start planning a collab almost immediately haha!

I fell in love with Lonely Rolling Star after hearing the 8-Bit Big Band version. It was all I listened to over winter break. I actually got to perform at a Jam clinic Lonely Rolling Star at MAGFest with my good friend Adrisaurus! And we got to play with other amazing musicians like insaneintherain, 8-Bit Music Theory, Adam Neely, and Charlie Rosen (leader of the 8-Bit Big Band). It was such an incredible experience, and got me thinking, I need to cover this song!

The initial idea was to put together electronics and a few acoustic instruments. That is a ridiculously hard thing to do… For a multitude of reasoning, especially when it comes to mixing.

Filming this video was super fun since I filmed another video on the same day! I filmed the week after PAX East, which was super convenient because I bought the Katamari plush at PAX East! Glad my little buddy, the Little Prince was able to make an appearance in the video!

I haven’t really done anything with electronics, so it was definitely a challenge, but really great to do something new! Every draft VGR sent me, I got more excited for the project! He put in so many incredible little details that I wanted to highlight as much as possible! The cover definitely pushed us both out of our comfort zones, but I loved the project every step of the way!

So I keep coming back to this song and I really love how you did the "you're lonely rolling star" sections. There's a great sound to how you start the chorus on a lower note (or at least it sounds that way to me)
As a plus it makes it easier for me to sing along since my range is more bass =p

Welp... I’ll be the only one to say it BUT. I don’t like how the volume of the vocals almost entirely overpowers the beats of the music :\

I love to feel the THWOMP of the bass and the added vocals was what I’ve always wanted when listening to the original mix but if I turned the volume up to good THWUMP levels the vocals would be slicing my brain to bits! You’d know what I’d mean if you listens between the two back to back.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad this version exists. It’s EXACTLY what I’ve always wanted... if not for the imbalance in sound (Not that I know anything about how adjusting that works. For all I know it was really hard getting it to where it is now)
