Synthetic Data & The Power of Twins for Trials
This roundtable of "Science in the Age of Experience 2024 - Generative Sciences for Society" moderated by Claire Biot, VP Life Sciences and Healthcare at Dassult Systèmes, is composed of inspiring leaders from the medical indutry. They shared a regulatory perspective on the challenges and many opportunities associated with the reuse and sharing of historical clinical trials or real-world data. Particular attention was paid to data sharing with the aim of creating synthetic controls in clinical product development.
While prospective randomized controlled trials are the gold standard for most late phase medical product development, there are certain settings where assigning patients to the current standard of care represents significant patient burden. In some cases, clinical equipoise may be questioned. There are resulting challenges in recruitment, retention, or compliance which can compromise study completion and ability to address the research question.
We were lucky to have with us:
- Sammi Tang, PhD, MBA, Vice President of Global Biometrics Department at Servier, a pharmaceutical group dedicated to tackling health challenges in particular cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
- Ruthie Davi, PhD, Senior Vice President, Statistics and Regulatory Science Innovation, Medidata Solutions, the leading provider of SaaS and data analytics solutions that support clinical research.
- Benjamin Besse, MD, PhD, Director of Clinical Research at Institut Gustave Roussy. The first cancer research and treatment center in France and Europe, maintains its position in the top 5 hospitals for oncology globally. As an internationally renowned Institute, Gustave Roussy is treating adults and children suffering frequent or rare cancers, at all stages of the disease.
- Shaun Rowark, MS, Associate Director - Data Access and Analysis, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). NICE provides national guidance and advice to improve health and social care in the UK. NICE is an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department of Health and Social Care. Its recommendations help practitioners and commissioners get the best care to people, fast, while ensuring value for the taxpayer.
