Elder Joseph of Vatopedi in this video discusses the importance of not losing hope in your salvation on account of your sins. He emphasizes that hopelessness and despondency are means of the devil to get us to give up on our spiritual lives, and that we must learn to get up as soon as we fall into sin and to ask for forgiveness from God.

Elder Joseph of Vatopedi was a spiritual child of Saint Joseph the Hesychast, who was recently canonized by the Orthodox Church. Elder Joseph spent 63 years on Mount Athos as a monk, a part of which he served as abbot at the Monastery of Vatopedi. I’m just 22 y/o.. is it normal to desire “death” (end of this earthly life) very very much at this young age? I am sick of this dark sin corrupted world... I want to be with Christ forever and I notice that I am feeling greatly impatient, knowing there are so many years I have to live.. This impatience can be so extreme that I sometimes have suicidal thoughts as if you want to end it asap so you will be faster with Christ, of course these thoughts are of you know and I immediately repent... I absolutely do not feel “welcome” in this world, there’s not 1 thing that I like, except God and the Church. I despise worldly things. I don’t have very close friends, I prefer to be alone most likely 100% of time. Also at church... and outside of church... not that I don’t love my brothers and sisters and my neighbors, but I feel like I want to focus my mind on Christ pretty much 100% of the time each and every day till I die and I just wanna be left alone...

My Jesus I am screaming and crying in my thoughts countless of times and I picture myself hugging You and I pour all my PLEASE have mercy on me I will give You everything You want!!!! My soul is Yours and I live for YOU only!!

The video translates αυτομιμσία as self reflection but it is not. The word Avtomimimsia is self criticism. (It could entail self reflection within it). It is turning against yourself to develop and feel a humble disposition and atmosphere of heart. My little opinion is this is how we develop humility. We say to ourselves things like 'I am the Christian who has no love. The world is burning but i have no prayer. I make mistakes. I make more mistakes than anyone else. I am worse than everyone else. I'm the greatest of sinners' etc. But it is a most powerful weapon to use against our own ego but CAUTION we must be very very careful in the beginning so we are not brought to dispair or self hate in an unhealthy way. So use it like salt on our food, just a little
