I have found that the Diatomaceous earth (I call it Dearth) works best if applied in a thin layer covering as much surface area as possible. My method for applying it is to put the Dearth in a spice shaker, and then tap (or flick) the container to dislodge the dearth from the shaker. Depending on the size of the holes in the shaker, the amount of force needed with the tap or flick changes. Try several different sized holes and see what works best for you. I also have somebody else hold the plant upside down after applying to the top surface of the leaves and apply the Dearth to the underside as well. If the Dearth gets under the leaves it will be extra effective, and it also is less likely to be dislodged by fan or any misting that is done to also help control. Dearth is my go to for any insects, I use it in my chicken coup, anytime ants come in, would use it for bedbugs if they ever were a problem, etc.

I also use Neem oil. The trick for me was always to keep rotating treatments in case the mites get resistant. Never stop changing it up or throwing extra stuff at them. (ie, soap water treatment and dearth for 2 weeks, then 2 weeks of Neem oil and spraying, then Dearth and alcohol treatment, etc).

You can also mechanically remove the mites by rinsing more hardy plants under the faucet upside down (I just climb in the tub and do it) and have a trusted friend (my wife) spray the plants on the underside with the shower head while I move them around and gently rub the leaves.

Finally I also add into my cycle some non-organic pesticides as long as my plants are not currently fruiting and are indoors. I know they say they are safe, but I don't want any residue from this left on my final product. I also use them sparingly and for like 1 or 2 applications, again to ensure nobody survives that is resistant to the other treatments.

The key for me has always been a combination approach I have found, and switching it up in case any happened to survive because of resistance.

Usually when I have a problem with my plants I have to watch several youtube videos to get a couple of answers. This time I got lucky and found this video first, only one video needed, thank you. Amazing job!

Very timely, I have spider mites devastating my herb garden. They love parsley, basil and thyme. I have been spraying neem oil insecticidal soap once a week to no avail. Will up the frequency and also try the DE and alcohol remedies. Thanks for a super helpful video!

This was the best video about spider mites. I just found them on my money trees, and I burnt my house down (in my head). I used neem oil spray on them but added neem oil, dr. Bronners & water into another spray bottle and cleaned all my other plants.

The soap and water treatment was definitely easy to make and worked for me.

Great informative video! I finally identified the tiny bugs as 2 spot spider mites on my overwintered tomato plants. I used a magnifying glass and took close ups with a cell phone. I have 6 tomatoes growing but they have black marks developing and the leaves had the characteristics yellow markings and curling.
I put the 2' plant into the bathtub and sprayed and wiped each leaf down with soapy water using black soap by Marius Fabre that has olive oil. Got it at an orchid greenhouse. I also cut away the worst leaves. I will continue trying your methods as well. Thanks! And keep up the great work you do!

Very informative. If you mix DE & water then spray your garden plants, the water will evaporate & the DE will stick to the leaves when it dries out.

Very well done. I would probably also include how longer able to store those chemicals that you made in the bottle.

I loved you vid man. The only difference I would do is compare tap water to rain.
Some plants can drink tap water but I've seen rap water hurt plants before.
I don't put tap water on anything.
Also I've seen plants become healthier by switching to rain.
I've heard you can put tapwater in a bucket and leave it outside for a few hours in the sun and the chlorine and fluoride become less lethal. Never tried it but who knows.
I love ladybugs. It's weird how most people naturally chose not to swat at one that lands on them. Something deep in our subconscious sees them as welcomed visitors. It's so weird.

Spider mites were killing my plants. I used peroxide solution to kill them, took days. Dried up some leaves, but works.
thanks for the video.

Love your vid. I've been using liquid dish soap with oil and water mix for years - but not aggressively. I understand why the problem still persists on some plants. I will now do this as indicated. I need to do some spraying now 😁 Thanks 👍🏾

Good tips - bought some strawberry plants from Lowes - infected my houseplants and vegetable starts - did not see it till leaf damage became obvious.

I've had good results with a mixture of neem and eucalyptus oil. I use about 2 tsp of eucalyptus oil and 1 tsp of neem and add a little surfactant.
