Indeed, for 99% of people, the security factor is pure marketing. I use a VPN, but for the geolocation factor mainly. However, it is true that VPNs helps you stay “more hidden”. For example, if you access any website on a coffee shop, even if it is HTTPs, anyone can find out you reach that site. And, the website can store information about you, like your IP address, and with that some information. However, it doesn't guarantee your info is safe, as it is in the hands of the VPN company. But sometimes, the VPN company may be safer than the site you are trying to reach. So I do believe there is a small security factor, though this is very debatable, and shouldn't be used as a selling point, as it has A LOT of nuances.

If you need a VPN (and I do), just set a reminder for when the subscription is coming up for renewal, and shop around again.
NordVPN plays pretty nicely with Linux - perhaps some others are catching up by now.

Great content. I want to add as well. It's like with bitcoin. Everyone thinks it is decentralized. It isn't. It is actually extremely centralized. Consider that every government on the planet regulates their own portion of the global network. Any of them, can at any time, re-route or totally halt TCP traffic as they see fit. If you can't hold it in your hand it is virtual. If it is virtual, it can move in and out of reality. If it isn't real, no one will give it value. It is only real when the collective's aggregate agree that it is real.

The VPN provider would normally have to buy someones data from the ISP.
For me, a VPN that genuinely offers everything normally promised by generic VPN providers, is ones own VPN, nothing less than a VPN of systems all which are under ones own control.

How about antivirus? I have Norton Antivirus on my laptop and am being on a daily basis asked by Norton to buy additional security i.e. VPN at a ridicules cost. This has been going on for years and I've refused every time with no issues. It always felt like a scam.

I am thinking of getting a VPN because I live in a commune where I use the home owners wifi and don't want him snooping about checking which websites I visit in his wifi logs. So would a VPN help in this regard?

I was not using a vpn but then I started needing the ability to upload to the server that hosts my website, it only allows me to log on and upload when vpn is switched on. Any idea why this is?
