Alka Kumari has had a keen awareness of what gender inequalities existed around her, in her community, be it the fact that young girls drop out of school, the prevalence of early marriage or the illiteracy of adult women in her village. Using the skills she’d learnt in the i-Saksham fellowship, she forged a path for herself to change what she’s seeing around her. In the video, Alka shares how this experience of direct action for social good has helped her develop a strong sense of identity.

I-Saksham Education and Learning Foundation has been building disadvantaged local young women as ‘Leaders of Change’ through education in the extremism-affected, backward areas of rural Bihar since 2017. i-Saksham means ‘I am capable’. We believe that enabling young women’s leadership (making them ‘saksham’) and helping them discover their potential through education can drive sustainable social change in their communities.
