Should You Get a New Computer Monitor? What Kind?

I think we can all agree that getting a new monitor is great, especially when it looks way better than our previous one. But do you really need a new monitor, and what kind should you get? It really depends on what purpose you'll be using it for, such as gaming, photo or video editing, or just general use. Different types of panels are better for different purposes, which are IPS, VA, and TN monitors.

256 shades of RGB.

Now that's a book I'd read.

Or maybe you don't even need one. Find out if your current monitor is already the best one for the job

For everyone that is playing FPS games like cs etc. I would say that the following is a safe order unless you know what you want/need. 1.refresh rate 2. Tilt/Hight customisability 3.size/space 4.ResolutionI Will explain MY list, and I know others think differently and there is a lot of threads in Reddit about this. 1.However, I went with refresh rate first since the difference is quite big jumping from 60 to 144 hertz (Hz). And being able to SEE more of the frames your computer outputs to your monitor is key in FPS games. Of course we can see more than 60 fps, but your monitor only gives you 60 fps. This means that you are able to see more than the doubled ammount of frames from your computer. But don't jump and buy a 144 Hz monitor right away, make sure your Computer is able to stay at 144+ fps at all time for the best experience. So if you have around 70-100 upgrade PC components instead. There is of course a difference between 144 and 240 Hz, but I just wouldnt recommend that due to the high price. And the difference is not as big goding from 60 to 144 as it is going from 144 to 240 hz. 2.I want as much "customisation" as possible. So that you can make sure that the monitor is in just the right height for you. 3. Size and space is maybe not as important as refresh rate, but playing fps on a 36" screen that is 20-50 cm from your face is not that comfortable. not seeing the edges of the screen can be frustrating (I know). So around 24" is in my opinion the best for fps games. Then the size of the stand for the monitor should also fint on your desk. 4. The reason I picked the resolution as 4th is because ALL 144 Hz monitor has 1080p a display out of the box.(correct me IF I'm wrong) And there is not a big difference between 1080 to 4K in cs. Why? It was not designed to look good, it was designed to run as good as possible since you want 144 Hz. I am glad to help, just write a really and I will answer your questions. And correct me where I'm wrong, and your opinion on the list I made. And if you are looking for a good person who does mouse/keyboards/mousepads, I would strongly recommend checking out Rocket Jump Ninja. For a cs tips and tricks, look towards Cruxal.

I'm using a 1440p TN monitor as my main screen for gaming it's super crisp and fast and for movies I have a 4k TV which has shitty response times. A really awesome combo imo.
Great video, I like how you don't pick a side and point out the good in both parties.

The Monitor response time is not actually the input latency, the real latency is usually at about 10-50 ms. the response time is actually the grey to grey time. I can't really explain it too well, but there are some videos which explain the grey to grey time, however these response times indicate the ghosting and together with the refresh rate it shows how much motion blur a monitor has.

The most important variable to consider is choosing a Matte (anti glare) screen, i avoid the more aesthetically pleasing glossy screens (the default Crapple non-choice option). As much as I am fond of myself I want to minimise all reflectivity.

Your video has helped me semi understand todays monitor marketing lingo. 12 mins not wasted on YT watching vloggers running errands is always time well spent.

I downloaded a monitor following the instructions on your previous similar videos. Thank you.

The monitor I use for my system is the ASUS VG248QE.
It's a 1080p monitor at 144Hz. It has built-in speakers and DisplayPort 1.2.
The monitor I had before my current one is the Dell ST 2010. This monitor was packaged with the old Dell pre-built I used to have.
It runs at 1600 x 900 resolution, only goes up to a maximum of 75Hz, has only a VGA and HDMI connector, and lacks height and tilt adjust. It's also incredibly dark, with one side much darker than the other. This could be due to it being old and used though.

The biggest concern I'd have if I was in the market for a new monitor is NOT having PWM (headaches aren't worth it). I wish this was brought up more. I'm glad BenQ and Asus are having more models with "eye care technology" to choose from.

1: input latency is not the same as (pixel) response time
2: IPS doesn't have THE BEST color accuracy out of all panels, OLED is the best in this aspect, though there is no availability atm

a good monitor is important, its one of the only parts of your build that moves to the next build

It just so happens that I need a new monitor for my PC, because my old one's power brick blew up somehow …
The thing is that I already had 2 monitors, which I bought 2nd hand from the same guy I got said PC from. And it always kind of annoyed me that the monitors weren't the same size or even the same resolution. I guess this is the chance to do something about it.
Since I use my PC mainly for making music, playing Minecraft and occasionally some unprofessional drawing and/or image editing, I think some TN panel devices will do fine for me. Also because I'll have to pay double the price for 2 devices… And coming from some 23.x" @ 1080p for the "better" one of the old monitors (which happens to be the one that broke down), I hope that 27" @ 1440p will do a good job in terms of providing more workspace but still be readable under normal conditions.
If you have any tipps and suggestions, I would appreciate that a lot! Thanks in advance…
