Hurricane Preparedness :: What's In Our Kit

We live in Florida so we are gearing up for hurricane season. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, but sometimes hurricanes occur outside of that (large) window. To help prepare for hurricane season, Florida offers a tax holiday every year at the beginning of June that applies to some hurricane supplies like generators, lights, batteries, etc.

In this video, I share some of the things we keep in our kit as well as some of the things we do to prepare for a hurricane when the threat is imminent.

I love tropical rain and hot days. I was born in Sydney and travel there often. I’m pleased in Sydney there aren’t any issues like hurricanes. Useful info. Phones are needed in an emergency. The trimming of plants is an awesome idea.

I was excited for this video, because preparing for a hurricane is some thing we’ve never had to even consider. I love that there is a tax holiday for people to be well prepared. What a smart way to help people be ready.

You should get dry bags to keep you electronics dry, portable power station like Westinghouse I gen 200, solar panels and power banks . Great preps !

I lost power from Irma here in SWFL for five (very HOT) days. I'm definitely SUPER prepared now. Great video and Unfortunately, I don't have space for a generator. My favorite recent purchases have been solar-powered lanterns, solar-powered radio, solar-powered block chargers, a single propane stovetop, a USB-powered fan and TONS of puzzles to kill the time if we do get hit again.

I was so stress after Irma that I think I only ate peach rings and chips, drank wine and listened to downloaded podcasts!!! I had a lot of other food, but it was pretty scary! Several days without even phone reception -- so literally no contact to the outside world. I would sit in my car just to feel some AC. It was pretty crazy!

I'm from up north and lived in the country. When we would loose power it might be over night to several days but was in the winter most of the time due to heavy snow or ice breaking power lines. We had emergency kits like yours but we worried about getting cold. Unless it was summer from a Tornado. Like you said, those are without warning.
Do the people in the South do what we crazy people up North do and run outside to 'see it'? We go outside (as if we dont have any kind of good sense) when we are told there is Tornado because we want to look. We are crazy I guess.
I think a Hurricane Party sounds like a lot of fun, if you get to have the party and the Hurricane misses you...

Charcuterie = Lunchables for adults! Wine? Grape juice for adults LOL! The spare tarp for just-in-case is an excellent idea! Had no idea that overflowing swimming pools can damage the pumps! You should host a Robbie Burns Night in January and read his poetry! More hurricane pro tips: With a coming hurricane, book a room at WDW! The resorts are built above and beyond code to withstand hurricane forces. Under a state of emergency, you can also bring your dogs! Disney won't lose power (or water) because they generate their own and they won't run out of food either! They have warehouse-sized pantries to serve millions! Entertainment will also be provided including character meets and dog parades. Additionally, the Speedway fuel stations on property near MK & DHS have plenty of fuel and without the long queues because of their location on property. Even during the recent pipeline crisis, those Speedway stations still had fuel, diesel and premium were still available, but no long queues. During the storm, you can move about inside the resorts that have interior corridors. If you go to the Parks during the day of their closing before the storm arrives, eat there before heading back to the resort. Last time there was a hurricane, families that waited to eat at the resorts after the Parks closed had a two hour wait to pickup their food. The resorts were serving pre-prepared boxed meals that they had assembled for the guests. Many CMs will remain on property during the storm and Disney hurries to clean up afterwards to get the Parks quickly reopened. Thank you for sharing your excellent and very informative tips!

This was interesting. I am from the northeast we get hurricanes, blizzards, tornados, and noreasters. They are random in intensity though so a lot of people do very little prepping for them until the last minute and they mostly buy water and toilet tissue.

So we just booked our very first DCL cruise in 2022 on the Wish…and now I realized it is during the most common time for hurricanes! Not sure I would prefer being in Florida versus Missouri with our tornados! I really liked your vlog, some important information!
