A living fossil: Dinospiders in Colombia

preview_player
Показать описание
Searching for Dinospiders or Hooded Tick-Spiders (Cryptocellus sp.) in the coastal mountains of western Colombia.

Corrections / additional comments:
7:20 - Termite nest, not an ant nest.
10:21 - This is not an accurate definition of a Lazarus taxon.
12:51 - Mites and ticks also begin with six legs. In both groups it is the larva with six legs, not the nymph.

Chapters:
00:00 - Intro
00:20 - Cope's Parrot Snake (Leptophis depressirostris)
02:18 - Dinospider #1 (Cryptocellus sp.)
03:49 - Peruvian Shield Mantis (Choeradodis rhombicollus)
07:59 - Grasshopper (Colpolopha sinuata)
09:26 - Dinospiders #2 & 3(Cryptocellus sp.)
10:56 - Brown Vine Snakes (Oxybelis aeneus / transandinus / vittatus)
12:32 - Dinospider #4 (Cryptocellus sp.)
14:08 - Stick Insect (Xerosomatini)
15:35 - Katydid (Pezochiton grandis)
17:08 - Dinospiders #1-10 (Cryptocellus sp.)

A single egg stored under the mother’s “hood”
No eyes or external mouthparts
Only 6 legs before the first molt
This feels like a dr Seuss species

This guy is so chill and relaxing. He's very much appreciated. It's so difficult to find people with a successful YouTube channel that isn't sensationalized or fake.

I am an animal enthusiast and I’ve never heard of “dinospiders”. How amazing and fascinating!

I like how that first snake was first in panic mode, but then was like "hey, you're kinda chill, huh?"

The NPC you randomly meet on your exploration in the jungle and just knows everything if you click "I have another question".

This guy reminds me of myself as a child, where a hundred yard walk down a woodland path could take an hour because I was peering under every rock and fallen log to see what might be hiding underneath!

This is the first hearing that moss could grow epizoically on a mantis. Excellent video!

No channel gets better shots, or is more informative, delivered calmly, simply, without superfluous unneccessaries. Truly brilliant.

I just spent 20 minutes watching someone carefully pick up leaves looking for spiders to pick up.
And I learned some things.
Kudos!

The mountains on the west coast of Colombia. Dude is tromping around the foothills of the Sierra Occidental in El Chocó. Very few ever do this. It’s one of the least studied terrestrial areas on the planet. Truly epic.

A Lazarus Taxon... such a cool term. I love your videos so much. Thank you for another great one. Those are some of the cutest arachnids I've ever seen.

I had no idea these existed. What an interesting order of arachnids.

I love how you handle the animals with such care and respect. Thank you for taking me on this incredibly interesting journey through a unique environment that I would never otherwise have seen or known about. It’s fascinating stuff - especially how natural selection has made these animals blend in with their surroundings. I KNOW I would never have found the mantis! Looked like a leaf, even up close. Amazing!

I'm not even a bug person, but this is really something. Just a walk through a forest can turn up possibly several new species of bug. Fascinating!

I loved learning about these animals. I do wish collecting wasn't part of the process, as we now have amazing tools for documenting what we find in the wild. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and this amazing footage!
