7.1 Fractional Units and Equal Shares

The digit on top is called Numerator and the digit on bottom is called Denominator.

Addition and Subtraction of Fractions

1/3 + 1/6

Mistake : 3 + 6 = 2/9. This is wrong.

When you add fractions, you need to make the bottom digit the same. How do you do that?

Here 6 is a multiple of 3 if you multiply 3 x 2. So in order to change 3 into 6, we multiply it by 2. Similarly, we multiply the top digit also by 2

So 1 x 2 / 3 x 2 = 2/6

So 2/6 + 1/ 6 = 3/6

You can further reduce 3/6 to 1/2

How do you do subtraction?

Subtracting two fractions is similar to adding them.

1. Find a common denominator: The denominators (bottom numbers) of both fractions must be the same.
2. Rewrite the fractions: Once the common denominator is found, rewrite both fractions so they have that same denominator.
3. Subtract the numerators: Subtract the top numbers (numerators) of the two fractions.
4. Simplify the result: If possible, simplify the resulting fraction to its lowest terms.

Example: 5/6 - 1/4

1. Find the least common denominator (LCD) : The least common multiple of 6 and 4 is 12.
2. Rewrite both fractions with 12 as the denominator:
5/6 (multiply by 2 both digits to get) 10/12

Similarly 1/4 will become 3/12

3. Now subtract the numerators : 10/12 - 3/12 = 7/12

4. If you can simplify, do that. But it is not possible in this case.

Figure it out

1. 1/3 kg

2. 1/4 kg

3. 3/4

4. 1/2 + 1/4

So 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4 kg

5. Quarter = 1/4

One and a half = 1 1/2

three quarters = 3/4

one and a quarter = 1 1/4

half = 1/2

two and a half = 2 1/2

7.2 Fractional units as Parts of a Whole

Figure it out

(a) 1/12

(b) 1/4

(c) 1/8

(d) 1/6

(e) 1/8

(f) 1/12 (a good idea is to divide this triangle into two parts and then calculate)

(g) 1/24

(h) 1/24
