Funny. As a settled Irishman, the English have usually greeted me with "You're not from round 'ere, are you?"

I think it's useful to use a full "my name is..." when speaking with people who don't speak good English though, for clarity.
If I said "Hi, I'm Dan" and you replied "I'm confused. I thought I was meeting Brian". I would know that your name isn't "confused".
Saying "my name is" helps avoid some of that introductory awkwardness if something like this happens.
