Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Switch had a LAN option this whole time, but it has to be unlocked with a hidden button combination. Get your Dock, wire it up to your network, and LAN it up!

This one also works on the Switch Lite! Even wireless!

LAN play is possible wireless as well. My wifi router is set to be able to support this. Thus, people wired in and people on the wifi network can LAN play together, with the benefit that the connection is stronger than general wireless play (because that uses Bluetooth and can get latency with more and more devices and controllers paired). It’s super useful when I’m having Mario kart parties with my friends and everyone can bring their own switch. This also increased the max play count, as wireless is only limited to 8, and wireless LAN isn’t using internet, but I believe is simply being hosted by the router itself!

I've actually known about this for years. It's also really cool to be able to use XLink Kai to play with others online without having to pay for an online service. If only there was an active player base, like how it is with Halo 2.
