In May this year I decided to go from the full bag to just seven clubs, Driver, Hybrid, 5, 7, 9, SW & Putter. My game hasn’t been affected but my bag is a great deal lighter, happy days.

I have a 50 yr old Wilson triple duty 54* wedge that I got at a garage sale when I first started playing golf and it's like magic whenever I use it. I've tried using other wedges, really wanted a vokey at one point but they all don't compare to how well I can control the ball with this wedge. I have titleist ap1's irons and a callaway lob and gap wedge, and then a heavy 50 yr old wedge that I use in the sand, even on green side bunkers that are higher than I am tall, plus anywhere I am within 60 yards from the green or on the fringe. Its always been that one club I cam always rely on, I think it's the heavy weight or sumthin. I just use my lob wedge cuz poppin ball up real high looks kinda cool. Definitely my favorite club in the bag

When I took up golf, I bought a starter set of Northwestern Clubs that came with a Driver, 3-Wood and 3-5-7-9 irons and a putter. I think that most of us could reduce our bag to that today, and still play a decent round!

If I went back to seven clubs (and I just might), I'd go with my 10.5* Driver; 18* 5-Wood; 4-6-8 irons, my 58* Tommy Armour Over and Out, WIDE Soul Dual Purpose Wedge (I use it as a Sand and Flop Wedge Combo...Works great in deep, thick grass too), and my Louisville Golf Brass and White Oak Mallet Putter!

The Driver's use is a No-Brainer...The 5-Wood is VERY VERSITILE...It's a GREAT Fairway Club, and it's a Great Club off the "T" in certain situations (short par 4's, long par 3's, and in tight narrow fairways where accuracy, and a high soft landing is needed!

The 4-iron can be used as a 3-4-5 iron by just changing your address to the ball. The 6-iron can be used the same way as a 5-6-7 iron, and the 8-iron can be used as a 7-8-9 iron. I use my 8-iron a lot for bump and run shots on link type courses.

If I need to go over sand, or hit out of sand, that's where my Tommy Armour 58* Dual Purpose Wedge comes in handy!

Maybe we've gotten used to having too many choices club wise, when we SHOULD be using the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) Principle!!!

Update: The reason I chose a 4-iron over a 4-Hybrid is because I feel it gives me more shot options...JMHO!!!

When I first started playing an old timer gave me great advice... Kid, here's all you need in your bag:
Driver 10.5
Wood 18
4, 6, 8 irons
Approach Wedge
Putter
Learn to use those clubs first. Dial them in, learn that one club can have multiple uses. Only then should you start filling in the gaps as you see fit.
Boy was he right. Give me an approach wedge today? I can just about build a house with it! 😆

Honestly Don't think you need 14 but I do think you need 8 to 10 clubs.. I agree with 2 Drivers I have my Primary Driver and a Shorter Driver for more control hits with my Primary Driver is not working or if I only need 200-220 Yard Hit. Driver, 3 Wood, 5 iron, 7 Iron, 9 Iron, 52 Degree, Putter.

I do this time to time. It forces you to be creative. I've already condensed my bag to 13 clubs. Took out the lob wedge. Sand wedge does everything under 100 yards.

I play better with 7-8 clubs. Make decision making easy and better course management. I enjoy hit 1/2, 3/4 and punch shots.

Don’t laugh, I have an 11.5 driver, cut down to 3 wood length. A 7 wood, 7 iron, 56 degree sand wedge and putter. No I am not on tour, but makes the game so enjoyable and I can walk the course too. Oh yeah all my clubs were purchase at various Goodwill or thrift stores. The brand name is Titleist, go figure ! 😊

I want 15 actually. The 14 club rule was in place when a PW was 50° & lob wedges didn't exist. Needs to be revised to 15 clubs. My setup:

D: 250+
3w: 230
5w: 215
3h: 200
4h: 190
5i: 180
6i: 170
7i: 160
8i: 150
9i: 140
PW: 130
GW: 115
LW: 80
& putter makes 14 clubs.
As you see, I have to ditch my SW to carry a LW, and just use my GW from bunkers. Could definitely use a 15th slot. Hell, just for fun I'd like to carry my 1 iron for tight tee shots without giving up my 5w & have a 30 yard gap between 3w & 3h with the only club between being a 1 iron off the turf (and I'm not that good), but that means I need 16 now.
Any club I drop for a driving iron or a SW causes a 20-30 yard gap. Can I play with 6 clubs? Sure, and it tests your shotmaking skills. Is it a stupidly restrictive rule for amateurs to have to follow? Damn right.

Do you offer store credit for clubs? Got a brand new RTX4 56/low wedge that I got given. But want to trade it for clubs to start building a set. Cannot play with one club 😉
