He was just innocent with limited thinking he had his first proper feeling for Hannah and then true feelings for jessica.
He realized his mistakes he acted so matured in hard times of season 4
His whole maturity level increased to a very healthy level in season four

When everything seemed nice and perfect he refused to love Jessica he wanted her not to love him so that he can let her live a peaceful life with her parents..

He never used his sad painful stories to gain glories . He kept his pains with family a secret
Even after officially adapted he felt guilty for living in Jensen's money
He didn't want him to use money that's supposed to be used for clay's needs.. (Bryce was the only person whom he got helps with full right all he resisted till the court date was just to keep his loyalty that's why he acted so depressed and blamed Hannah as she's lying ).
