What is a truck driver's responsibility? Truck drivers have a number of responsibilities that other drivers do not have simply because of the nature of trucks that they're driving on the road and the increased danger that they pose to other motorists. One of those main things is maximum driving time and also the amount of hours that they need to take off in between shifts. In California, we have what's called an 80 hour eight day rule. And basically this means that a driver cannot work more than 80 hours in an eight day period. They must take at least 10 hours off in between their shifts, and after this eight day period, there has to be a 34 hour off duty period. This helps make sure that they are rested and alert, which is another responsibility that truck drivers have as well. They also to record their duty status every 24 hour period and this include things like the date, the miles driven, the vehicle ID number and other basic information like that.

A big one that some people might not know about is that truck drivers actually aren't allowed to drive with a blood alcohol content of over 0.04. So it's a lot lower than the regular normal BAC level. Again, just because they're operating such a dangerous vehicle so they need to be more alert, more rested, and just better behind the wheel. The last thing is that they need to inspect the vehicle before they start driving it and after. This is to confirm the vehicle is safe to operate. They need to confirm that all the equipment is in working order, like the brakes, steering mechanisms, lights, tires, and they need to review what they're seeing on the vehicle then against what's been done in prior reports. All of that is logged and kept in a book so that, again, this is all just to make sure that trucks are as safe as possible on the road.
