There's an intersection in my hometown that used to have pedestrian signals like those, with 4" vibrating bells as an audible pedestrian signal, and they sure were loud. They only rang when "WALK" was on. The original signal housings are still there, but now they have LED hand and man modules in them, and the bells were replaced with Wilcox audible signals that make a cuckoo-type sound.
