The Non-Proliferation Treaty, signed in 1970, is reviewed every five years. There are talks ahead of this scheduled event called PrepCom (short for preparatory committee) in which the member states of this club take part. In this month’s Prepcom, the United States highlighted their concerns regarding Russia, China and North Korea. Regarding Tehran, it made do with an oblique reference, saying only that “questions concerning Iran’s nuclear program and safeguards compliance remain.” As we are interested in answers and not only questions, we wonder whether this means that both the Biden Administration and the IAEA have resigned themselves to the inevitability of a nuclear-armed Iran, or, conversely, perhaps a new deal committing Tehran to restraint is in the offing.
