A proverb is a didactic saying, a commonly repeated statement that teaches a moral lesson or gives everyday advice. Every language has them, but sometimes it seems as though English has an unusually large number. Many proverbs are quite old and have been used for hundreds of years. "Strike while the iron is hot," for example, comes from the blacksmith's trade, which is not so common these days. We've gathered together 50 of the most common proverbs, and we guarantee that if you learn these, you'll hear them often in English conversation. Are you ready?

Bravo! Sent this to my niece and nephew, who were trying to use a proverb the other day while completing a task. They ended up watching this over and over again.

Actually 'A stitch in time...' refers to repairing something, (e.g. a garment) before the hole gets any bigger (when it will require 'nine stiches'). In other words taking action to repair damage immediately and not putting it off until it needs more work to fix.
