So happy to see you're advertising the bioinformatics field. I had pretty close experience with bioinformatics as you did, I was also terrified in the beginning and not interested in coding as well, but once I started it turned into my passion and not just a job but also a hobby.

Also, I think for those who have biological knowledge and want to get a bit of an idea about bioinformatics, Galaxy is a really nice platform where you can run so many different tools depending on the goal of your analysis. The best part is it does not require any programming skills and it is really user-friendly.

For those in the UK the NHS also employs Clinical Bioinformaticians - there's a great 3 year training programme (NHS Scientist Training Programme - Bioinformatics) that involves on the job training and a part time funded masters degree

I work as a Bioinformaticion in the US. The salary is higher but also the living cost. I work in the field of Epigenetics.

You’re so correct about the gap in the market regarding bioinformatics courses/information. I’m a microbiology undergraduate student interested in pursuing a career in bioinformatics & I’d love to see a course designed by you! Thanks for all the wonderful content.

Finishing my masters in bioinformatics this year. So happy to have found this channel

Omg you are so encouraging! As a student also change my major from biology to bioinformatics, I always feel like that I cannot beat/ equal to the computational students.

For anyone who did a maths or computer science undergrad, MSc bioinformatics courses welcome you with open arms. It was a really good experience for me as a maths undergraduate because i helped everyone on my course with the stats and algorithms modules and they in turn helped with proteins and genomics modules 😊

Also, if you have any advice to get through a PhD, that would be brilliant. I'm doing mine part time and have no idea what im doing most of the time 🙈

It is so amazing that you are bringing women into this field by the exposure and role modeling!!! This is a real world way to change things for the better. You rock!

I would definitely be interested in your bioinformatics insight! I’m a biology undergrad major and got accepted into a bioinformatics research program for this spring. Your video came at the perfect time. Thank you for posting those links as well. :)

I would absolutely LOVE it if you released a bioinformatics course!! I love your material so much and am currently trying *and struggling* to transition from a comp sci career into a bioinformatics career! I’m hoping to work in industry but your work is very inspiring and I know I’d learn a lot from any course you teach. Thank you so much for this video!

i've been following you for quite a while now and it's thanks to you that i even found out that bioinformatics even existed! i also started off aspiring to be a physician assistant/associate, but ive always had a passion for the software/computer science field. it inspires me so much more knowing you started off from a similar point as i am currently at :)

Programming at a FAANG company (Facebook, Netflix, Amazon, etc.) pays around 400, 000+ a year. BUT you sign your life away. 70+ hour weeks is the norm.

Wow, great information! I was thinking of doing Data Science in the biology field but didnt know it had a specific name. Thanks for explaining so thoroughly

Everything was so beautifully said!! I'm shocked to hear that the salaries may be better here than the UK...that's wild. I actually want to steer away from academia, but it's not looking like I will anytime soon 😅 I've been very patiently waiting for this video lol thank you so much for posting this ❤

I love this video! Currently pursuing a major in biology with a concentration in biotechnology. I have one year left and decided to add Python, Data Analytics and later R. Your video confirmed my plan and your excitement is contagious! 💕💕💕

I would say if anyone is going to Bioinformatics I would suggest do a CS degree or CE/EE degree with a some electives in bioinformatics/ biology. You’ll come out your degree with the advance programming skills, embedded software, computer architecture, understanding web and app development, Deep of understanding of Linux, CLI, computer networking, mathematics/ probability stats than a biologist, which for the most part is the core for most jobs.

it also opens more doors to other fields such as aerospace/ semiconductors and big tech, fintech and career paths. biotech is very niche and have a high tendency of layoff .There are a lump sum of biotech companies. You do not want to get pigeon hole. It also hard to transition into other industries if have a background in biology.

If you are CS or CE/EE you can literally work everywhere since you have a good foundations. There are similar roles like bioinformatics like econometrics, which is essentially a bioinformátican, but it’s strictly for economic data but they tend to hire CS/Math/ / CE/EE/ economy.

I was once told by a director that its easier to teach biology and chemistry to an engineer or CS( EE/CE/ Chem e, CS ) than it is too teach programming / advance stats mathematics/ electronics/ controls to biologist. That’s because usually engineers and cs planning on going to bio tech have already a general knowledge of bio.
