How to install an oak threshold

How to install an oak threshold, sometimes an oak threshold will be needed as a transition piece from a ceramic or porcelain tile floor to an oak floor. The first thing that needs to be done is to make sure the bevel where the oak meets the tile is the same thickness or slightly thicker than the tile. Ripping the oak may be necessary. The threshold will be installed using finish nails of an appropriate length. Because the oak is a hard wood it is a very good idea to first drill pilot holes through the oak to avoid splitting the threshold while the nail is driven through it. The pilot hole should only go through the thickness of the threshold. The finish nails are then set below the surface of the threshold using a nail set, and the holes are filled with a wood filler that matches the oak. A small gap should be left between the oak and the tile and then filled with a color matching caulk of the same color as the floor grout. In this case I did not coat the threshold because the oak floors were going to be sanded and refinished. Bare oak will stain if it gets wet, so it should be protected when the caulk is applied.

Sal, you are brilliant! I've learned so much from your videos. Wiping the caulk with a sponge to make a smooth bead is a great tip - I love it!

I'm surprised you didn't also use some construction adhesive to glue it down before nailing it. They get stwepped on regularly and are prone coming loose if just nailed IMO

Great idea. I bought the expensive schuter transition for my porcelain tile that I would only use maybe 10 inchs of.

What to do If the installation is not simple straight cut. The casing has door trim.?

Well done! I learned many tips and plan to attempt this with a 4 ft oak threshold.

Great video, as always.  I'd be really grateful if you released a video about transitioning from tile to carpet.

Hi! I have a pre finished t molding. Is it wise to use nails or screws? Will the wood filler blend when its pre finished or should I just glue it down?

Hi Sal - love your channel. Have you ever done a video where you have to tile up to an exterior wide slider door? I have an Anderson 11 foot slider on new construction and I am not quite sure what tile goes to on the floor

Do you not need wood filler or does the scraping with the blade fill in the nail holes? Sponge is something I'll def use in the future.

What's the eraser-like thing you used to fill up the nail holes? Also did you just use water in sponge to wipe off the silicone caulk between the threshold and floor? How about the small gap between the threshold and door jamb?

Also: what if the wood floor isn't flat but a bit slanted? What can you use to fill up the gap difference on the wood-floor side? (grout/adhesive probably wouldn't work well with wood?) Many thanks!

Nail?  You nailed it?  I was going to use screws.  I assume you used ribbed or 'ringed' nails so they'll be less likely to work their way out of the wood as the threshold flexes?

hi.  what about the expansion gap for the oak?  i thought you leave an expansion gap of the thickness of the wood?  thanks.
