Share repurchase programs are set to reach $1 trillion by next year, double-digit increases from last year, and it's increasing the earnings per share for stocks. The 'official' research is mixed on whether buybacks help investors but common sense and history tell a different story. Companies buying back their shares boost the stock price.

A buyback or share repurchase program is just what it sounds like. The board of directors for a company, along with management, determines the cash needs of the company over the next few years. They estimate cash inflows and all the investing opportunities or growth projects management would like to spend on and if there’s cash left over, instead of having it sit there earning low money market rates, they can issue a dividend or buyback the company’s stock.

Another reason companies buyback could be to defend stock price. However when they stop, logic would suggest the stock price would fall as volume will dip. Thoughts?

Own stocks for the long term! Buybacks increase earnings per share and usually increases stock price. Almost everyone can buy index or mutual funds starting with $100. Keep it up for 30-40 years and you won’t be eating dog food when you are old.
