Halperin’s take on the debate was a little goofy tonight. I have a lot of respect for Mark’s work, and I get that the press is a mess in general, especially in the era of Trump, but tonight wasn’t about the “refs.” I feel he missed the story here.

Harris mopped the floor with Trump's combover.

He shouted on the TV half the time. Looked angry. Not good.

Harris got one point across. Trump is easily manipulated.

Harris did not explain anything. All she did was recite the line and smile without getting pressed, similar to the CNN interview. She didn't really even respond to Trump, at most she will wince in pain when he brings up something useful against her (and she'll put her hand on her chin but wouldn't have a table to lean on, which is probably why she wanted one). Harris is a candidate without the motivations of policy, she doesn't seem to have any real opinion other than to say what will get her in power. This was a strength in the debate, because even though she failed to answer anything, she held her composure far better than Biden. Trump on the other hand had many useful attacks to use, but would fail at organizing them to draw a response from her. He could not draw a response because she doesn't actually care about anything they are talking about. Trump began calm but became enflamed by the moderators who fought him at every level in open bias. He also seemed insecure from the setting and felt the need to have a final say in every topic, exhausting his own answers. Talking about the pets was his biggest mistake of the night. The conversation might work as a curiosity for a rally of supporters but not in giving an argument at a debate, regardless if it were true or not. It was not a useful topic anyone was prepared to confront and is what most of us will take home from this debate. However, if I had not watched the debate and took time with every highlight besides the pets topic, I would think Trump won on everything except in responding to Harris on abortion, her single issue that she might have an opinion over. The result is Harris looked composed and confident with the moderators on her side but did not give any answers only attacks, and Trump looked distracted and frustrated but had the more useful answer in the end (the moderators almost seemed like they wanted an exclusive interview). I don't think this will change the election though, unless people really care about politicians one-upping one another less than 2 months from election day.

Fair assessment Mark. I thought Trump had an opportunity to really turn up the heat in this race, but he allowed himself to get baited and flustered. He rambled on and repeated himself a lot. Kamala also rambled and repeated herself, but did so slowly and gave more of an impression of being 'in control'. People can roll their eyes at criticizing the moderators, but sorry it's the truth that they were awful and obviously one-sided. They were giving opinions to refute Trump, but allowed Harris to get away with multiple lies. I said before the debate that it wouldn't change much and still feel that way.

Always instructive to see Trump supporters desperately whine about the moderators rather than acknowledge that Harris ran circles around him. Just like Trump playing victim every day of his life

Why don’t you let the voters tell the story instead of coming out with your opinion before anybody has a chance to express theirs? It seems like you’re trying to influence their opinion.

The optics were devastating for trump. The scowling. The submissive posture. It was almost as if his Mommy was scolding him.

Hey Mark, maybe consider not having a 5-1 ratio of Trump supporters to Harris supporters if you want people to buy your whole shtick of this platform.

With how scripted Kamala was almost every time she talked after being asked a question makes me think she got the questions before the debate and basically rehearsed for 5-6 days. This is someone who couldn't be trusted to do an interview and when she did do an interview it was terrible. I think there was definite coordination between Kamala and ABC regarding the questions. Also the moderators were clearly biased against Trump "fact-checking" him and didn't fact check Kamala a single time, not even on the "good people on both sides" hoax. Or the "bloodbath" comment where Trump was clearly talking about the state of the economy - not in regards to the results of the election.

Imagine being a citizen in Springfield, OH where they were genuinely struggling with these migrants and there are photos of them eating animals and listening to these privileged Democrats on here saying it's not happening. It's so telling.
