Does anyone else get the feeling that Toby just wants to make YouTube videos again and Pokemon TCG pocket is just the outlet for it

For a millennial like myself, I don’t have the time to play TCG in person, or having an immediate group to play with in general. I’m always working so digital trading card games on my phone is really ideal for me.

For those that have more time than money, free to play is your friend, for those like myself that have more money than time, purchase away. I spent thousands of dollars on World of Warcraft back in the day and have no regrets.

I was thinking it would be a good way to learn without having to buy packs of cards

Why don't people scream "SCAM" with other games like Pokemon Go, Masters, Unite, and other games? Is it just because it's cards?

If the game is good, it’ll be around for a long time. Pokémon Go’s still going 8 years later and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Masters EX is going on 6 years. Pokémon mobile games that do well have a lot of staying power

Idk man regular Pokémon cards also seem like a scam if not a scam a poor financial decision.

In a way its a form of gambling you are hoping for a good card or a card you dont have yet and you might not get it.

But thats just my opinion to each their own ofcourse and ofcourse theres levels to it personally I think trying to complete an entire card set is excessive and a poor use of money but I don't see the harm in getting 1-10 packs of the new set although I wouldn't do it personally Im not against it

The big picture is that the game is from the Pokemon Company and from DeNA. Both had 2 games that were shut down. They were Blood Brothers 2 and Pokemon Duel.

Spot on with this one Toby. I mean, hearthstone is much the same way with "not owning" things, but I don't think that makes it a scam or anything because of it. At the end of the day is just a micro transaction like in any other game

Here is how I view spending money on free to play games
What money you put in you will never get back because one day the game might no longer become accessible to play due to it being dependent on servers a company is no longer paying for
But why spend money? There are two main reasons, 1. To be given an advantage (like imagine you could spend money to get specific rare to obtain cards for a specific deck build) 2. You enjoy the game and want to give the company money (you could consider it as a donation, paying what you want for the game, or wanting to spend money to help contribute to the game to last as long as possible)

Some people forget that even when you buy a physical game it doesn't include the whole game and you have to download an update day one, so if you buy it after the server is shut down it'll probably be mostly unplayable without the update, btw Yu-Gi-Oh has done similar games, also Shadowverse too. I hope the qr code cards work with it?

In case you haven't noticed, the TCG is a scam - you're not even guaranteed a decent playable card per packet, you usually have to buy a ridiculous amount of packs before you get anything decent. Most of every set isn't played in tournaments, a typical tournament deck is made up of 1/3 - 1/2 of trainer cards, but a booster pack may not even contain 1.

I've always had that same opinion about online games and it's interesting seeing someone agreeing with it too. Yeah, it's a shame these kind of games where you purchase stuff will one day go away, and the ideal scenario would be that they're always playable somehow. But in the end, if you got a good experience out of it, for me at least, it's still worth it even if I don't get to keep ownership of those things, because again, I paid for enjoyment of something not for ownership. I would put it in the same boat as paying for any subscription service, where you obviously don't keep stuff for yourself but to use it for a while. Of course, in an ideal world we could be allowed to keep these things forever regardless of servers and all that junk, but at least for now that's how things are.
Although I say that as a low spender, I think people who binge much more money into these games and services have more right to be mad when they inevitably shut down

If you want the free version of the game you should play it that way 100%. If you feel you's get enjoyment value out of spending money on it and your an adult in control of your finances then, you can do that too. Digital goods are an odd topic to be fair to those bothered by that but I don't know I could call it a scam any more than cosmetics in Fortnite, owning pokemon digitally or card packs in hearthstone.

Spending money on video game is like any other services, you pay to buy temporary happiness and THAT'S THE POINT. I spent 100 of dollars 10 year ago to the now shut down game for some skins and did it worth it? Absolutely. I play the heck out of it everyday with my friends and had fun memories and connection with them for years.
Not everything you spend has to be a trophy on your shelf for your grandson to see dude

The only reason I've never played the tcg is because I already play too many card games and my wallet can't handle it.
I've wanted to, at the minimum, collect the cards since I was a kid...but I chose YGO instead. Sounds like a fun app to download when it comes out

It's not more a scam than heartstone is

I mean, aren't games like Destiny 1 or Overwatch 1 scams in that sense too?
Since they are online games designed to be played on multiplayer and nobody plays them, so the games are kinda lost now
I don't see people complaining about that for those kind of games. Also, League of Legends is almost 15 years old, so... yeaaah

Enjoyment is the key - servers can be turned off, I could spill a cup of tea over a binder, either way I'll have enjoyed collecting both!
