A lot of people in the comments forget Glaciers, ice caps, etc... form on land meaning that they are not in the sea so when they melt they get added to the current seal levels increasing them

Edit: Why tf are you guys arguing, the ice from the glaciers gets warmed slightly by the sun, causing it to crack. Over time, the cracks allow parts of the glacier to break off the land it is on. The ice floats away into warmer waters and melts. Hopefully that clears thing up for some people.

For the people who don't understand. He is right, but what worries the scientists isn't ice in the water. It's the ice that isn't. The ones on land melting are the issues that could cause problems.

Technically pipes break before it fully forms into ice. What typically happens is the expanding ice builds an immense amount of pressure and the still liquid water bursts the pipe.

It's less likely to burst pipes with just freezing water, but it will also happen. If not, still fatigued them

The pipe doesn’t actually break where it is frozen. The pipe expands where the freezing starts that pushes the unfrozen water down the pipe. The freezing continues down the pipe and the pressure increases in till it reaches a pressure the pipe cannot contain. Then it bursts. Lots of times the frozen pipe has expanded to a larger diameter and the fittings used to repair won’t fit because they are too small.
