It’s funny because as a kid, I used to pronounce it “Tol-keen” as it should’ve been, but then hearing many others including my superiors pronounce it “Tol-kin”, so then I just followed suit growing up, until now where I realized my younger was correct.
So good on you, 8 year old self…

Yes, I pronounced it wrong, with a few variations, for many decades. Truth always wins.

You look at that spelling and realize it can ONLY be pronounced "TOLE-keen."
Edit/Note: Actually, if we're going by how it looks, then depending on region, the natural tendency MIGHT be to say "TOHL-kee-en."

Or you can say it like Charlie Rose and call him Toy-Kin

I always said Tol-keen; I had thought Tol-kin was just a slightly more British and quickly-spoken way of saying it

Only Americans. Everyone else pronounces it correctly. Americans seem to have trouble with pronouncing anything in the English language. It's probably no surprise that they had to come up with the bastardised "American English", and funnily enough most of the time still don't pronounce the words in that form correctly either. The "ein" in English has the long 'e' sound followed by the in, technically making the sound "eein" but when placed together sounds more like "een". Why anyone would drop the "e" entirely is beyond any rationale. It's like many Americans saying Smaug as Smog. How do you get an "o" out of "au"? It boggles the mind.
