Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15500 vs.15400 - Can You Spot The Difference??

The AP Royal Oak is a watch that needs no introduction. With it's timeless lines and deep heritage it is a watch that definitely be around for quite some time. There have been a few versions fo the Royal Oak, with the latest being the ref#15500. bThe changes are subtle but add up to a lot when you look closely. One of the biggest but subtle changes that Audemars Piguet did on the 15500 from the 15400 is the dial. The new version is missing the "automatic" writing that is on the 6 o'clock position of the dial. Another big change was that the date window was moved a bit more to the left thus eliminating the small hour indicated that it once had to the right of it. Combine those things with thicker indicators and a matching new second hand counter weight and once you look closely it pretty much looks completely different that the previous 15400. Both watches still remain 41mm however the new 15500 has the new Caliber 4302 that is also used on the CODE 11.599 and related the previous Calibre 3120 with its very familiar gold rotor. This new movement upgrade made the case on the new Royal Oak 15500 a bit thicker. One of my favorite thing about this upgrade is the fact that the new movement is 32mm and gives us so much more to view under that sapphire glass. Power reserve was also raised from 60 hrs to 70hrs for those that care about this type of stuff.
I feel that this is like when they have updated the Rolex Submariner in the sense that how do you make a watch better that already is great. I think that they did a great job. The big question is which one will be worth more in the future. My guess is that the AP 15400 is out of production and may the one that is harder to get and maintain the most for now.

Comment below which one do you like better!

That movement on the 15500 is off the chain.. Finally a movement which fits the watch.

What I appreciate most from your videos is the firsthand owner’s perspective on watches rather than the usual technical specs.

Case and dial design, my vote goes to the 15400, I just like the index on the 15400 better as it carries more weight and the 'automatic' print doesn't bother me at all. Movement design and decoration, my vote goes to 15500 definitely! Thanks Eric, for the lovely video, featuring the beautiful city!

15400 looks better from the front. 15500 looks better from the back.

The 15500 has a upgraded movement. This means enough for an AP. A must - have!

Eric I think the 15500 is a great looking watch, but I would go for the 15400 it`s awesome !

I was lucky enough to pick up a 15400 at the bottom and opted for the silver/white dial that ended up being discontinued. I've been courted with offers to sell it but it's just such a joy to wear.

I have a 15400st and feel the dial looks more balanced due to 'AUTOMATIC' wording and there's just something more appealing about an 'older' royal oak

power reserve needs to get you from 5 PM Friday afternoon to 8 AM Monday morning so when you take off the work watch and put on the weekend play watch it still runs Monday morning. That's 64 hours, so yes 60 to 70 makes a big difference but 70 to 80 not so much.

No question the 15000 looks cleaner and has a nicer caseback, but the 15400 dial is just more balanced... also the watch is not as high. Imo these things are more important than the caseback/movement upgrades.

Great video as always. I love the RO line of watches, but always felt the 41mm wore too large due to the case design. 39mm is the optimal size no matter what, even the classic midsized 36mm wears more like the 39mm because of the actual case dimensions around the bezel. My wrist size is nearly 7".

The new caseback is a deal breaker for me👌

15500 for me, like the cleaner dial without ‘automatic’ and the new movement is beautiful and rightly fit.

15400 is my choice. Look at the rotor through a is made like a perfect coin. The new rotor is a modern technical product. Ok, so the movement is bigger, the watch is less elegant. The new date also a modern look. BUT: the Oak is a design from 1970. Why all these changes?

To me the 15400 just looks better everywhere.
15500 reminds me a bit of a TAG...

Hello Eric, thanks for this perfect video and its information. I was able to buy another 15400 rosegold blue dial and therefore my love belongs to her.

I think the 15400 with the 15500 movement is the best of both worlds!
