How to Write Your First Bars | Harry Mack

Love doing these Q&A sessions where I can answer questions from the community. Here are my thought on how to write starts writing your first raps.

Just like writing fiction, like Harry says - write the bars! When you think of a particularly nice bar - make sure to jot it down for your own encouragement. If you can't think of what to write - turn on a beat you like (YouTube is full of them, Mack uses KidGoran a lot and those are great) and just freestyle nonsense. 99% of what you say might be nonsensical, but you're not actually trying to freestyle, what you want to do is latch onto it when you say something in the freestyle that resonates with you, or you flow in a nice way even if you're not saying anything that makes sense. Pick out the flow, pick out the subject matter from the line you said that resonated with you, be honest, and write.

AND HAVE FUN! I teach math, but I just have to rap too - because it's so darn fun.

It took a bit to realize not to keep it all inside/
My pride was like the only thing that kept myself alive/

But when I'm at my lowest its just me, myself, and I/
I've noticed how to focus and it's helped me to survive/
I stop to smell the roses and it helps when I'm deprived/
I need to be outside where there's nature and there's life....

Its funny lmao I been writing for a while now maybe about 3-6 months and still don't have anything to question. Its not that I think my shit are good, I just genuinely don't care if its cringey lmao. Also my favorite are the ones I pour my heart into which happens to be my first written, so I guess pour your heart out to your piece too!

Why am I writin' these bars? I'm not hard.
A form of expression it's art. I'm not barred.
Inspired by a question from one of your fans,
So I sat at the paper - a pad and a pen.
Start with 8 bars? I thought "yo man that's easy!"
Barely got 3 and I think I feel queasy.
But I'm gonna finish the task, I ask, why mask,
The thoughts, I fought, a lot, been burning inside.
This is my chance, to dance, to prance,

Free myself through expression, creatively.

Harry wjere can I send you my verse? I'm not an mc and stopped writing long time ago but recently been invited to continue from dope mcs who said I was sick with it.

I just need help understanding how mcs structure a 16 so every bar is essential to the scheme or message and not just random..

I tend to get 4 bars structured together in an intricate way but I can't follow this for a whole 16 yet. I get patches of well written structured parts and the bars in-between are forced and don't fit ruining the whole verse lol.

How do you structure a complete thought in your verses so that all bars fit the subject matter and build on themselves?
