I forgot to mention when putting your key fob in sleep mode, you can simply wake it up by clicking any button on the key fob. You’ll need your key fob to be awake to start the car.

You just helped us with our autistic child - if he gets separated from us he can always get back in the car to wait for us. The rule is for him to return to the car. This is a huge help!! He quickly learned the code and this tip is such a life saver!

Just bought a 2024 Crosstrek and seeing that the “Get Started’ guide is 160 pages, I am especially grateful for your videos - thank you!

This works for my 2016 Subaru Outback as well. Not exactly same procedures but it works similar like this. Great video, thanks for sharing.

1. Hold down the "Lock" button on the key fob and simultaneously press the PIN entry button located on the beside the back license plate on the trunk door until the car emits a beep sound. This action activates the PIN setup mode.
2. Press the "Unlock" button on the key fob. You now have 30 seconds to complete the PIN setup process.
3. To set the first digit of your PIN, press the PIN entry button the desired number of times, then stop. The car will emit a beep to confirm that the number has been registered. Repeat this step for each subsequent digit of your PIN, clicking the PIN entry button the appropriate number of times for each digit.
4. Once you have entered all five digits of your PIN, the car will start beeping continuously. This indicates that the PIN has been successfully set.
5. To unlock the car using the PIN, simply use the PIN entry button by entering the digits of your PIN using the same procedure you used during setup.

You just saved me from worrying about leaving my key stashed on the beach while surfing; therefore you may have saved my vehicle from being stolen! You rock man, thanks!

I bought a 2022 Outback today and I asked the dealer if they had the pin code access on this one. Three different men there didn't know (the fourth said he remembered hearing something about it but didn't know how to do it). One said... "we're hiring" lol Thanks for the information.

OMG! A billion thanks!!! Wish I'd seen this when you first posted. Locked keys, phone everything in the car and we were 17 miles from anywhere. Subaru couldn't unlock it because there was no signal where the car was. This would have save me and now it will. Also, I wanted to store a key in my roof box but it kept unlocking the car. I am forever grateful. You have a new subscriber!

This one function has sold me on the Outback. I live in Australia and this vehicle is perfect for me when I go to the beach, snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking. Being able to deactivate and leave the key fob in the car, and use a pin code to get back in, will save my worry of my keys getting lost, or getting wet when doing those activities. 👍

Another MASSIVE plus for me, which I think you should talk about if you haven't already done so, is how the seats can fold down flat right through from the front passenger seat, to the rear of the car.

Every other car I have folded the seats down in have always had the front seat fold down on top of the rear seat when folded down.

The Outback seat can be moved forward enough that once the head rests are taken out, the front seat can be folded down flush with the rear folded seat, making an almost perfectly flat tray from front to back.

It makes this vehicle perfect for doing an overnight camp in as well. And being able to deactivate the key fob also means I can lock myself in the car if camping over night inside the car without the worry of someone opening the car while I am in it.

Thank you Alex, for us old timers who moved from a 2003 manual shift Toyota Celica to 2021 Outback XT was a major “technology shock”. Your videos are easy to follow and fun. Now I am lovin’ my Outback!! BTW I still love driving my Yellow Celica, too! jj

Perfect. I have a '21 Forester and I'm a trail runner and have been carrying along the bulky fob on my runs. Now I know!

Thanks Alex! This saved my butt! Accidentally left my keys in my forester the other day and when I remote started it from the app, it locked my fob in the car. Had I not programmed the PIN code, I would have been sunk!

Excellent! Just did this and am relieved to have the option. I took my keys in a dry bag on the river twice last week and was worried something would go wrong. Not again.

Went from a 04 dodge Cummins 2500 to a 2023 OBW, every time I get in my OBW I smile and learn something new about it! I really didn’t know any features from my sales person, the service department guy showed me some cool stuff about the tailgate sensor, your channel and the info you put out should be standard knowledge for Subaru dealers across the board. I hope Bachman really treats you well and keeps encouraging you to put more knowledge out there, I’ll prob make the trip to purchase my next Subaru from ya as well! Thanks again!

I use a Faraday pouch for the fob and put it in the trunk of my 2015 Legacy when i park at the airport for several days. When I return, i enter the the code. The doors unlock and I use the trunk switch to open it and take out the fob and the pouch . It's the same pouch that keeps the fob signal suppressed from thieves at home. Amazon has a good selection of pouches. i don't like putting the fob to sleep.

I just tried this on my 2019 Crosstrek and my wife’s 2018 Outback (without EyeSight), and it worked fine on both of them. Thanks for this AWESOME tip!

This was a great tutorial. I sat for close to an hour trying to set this on our '22. The instructions in the manual are a bit ambiguous - and because of the lockdowns and lack of staff no one at my local dealership could help. Thank you!

I just recently bought an 2016 Subaru Outback Limited automatic which I love. Since 1991 I have had Subaru's. I just recently came upon your YouTube videos which are most helpful so I thank you very much for showing us these hacks. Keep up the great work!!

Wish I had seen this video two weeks ago, when I did a mud run. My 2019 Forester has this feature, but never set it up. Seemed really complicated. You made it very simple. Thank you. Next mud run, I won't have to carry the key fob.
