Dave rants about the 2013 Australian federal election this weekend, September 7th.
It's all about the National Broadband Network, how bat shit crazy Tony Abbot's policies are, how the Senate might be the only hope for the future of the country, and how Wikileaks will throw a spanner in the works.

No, I cannot get ADSL2+ at home with 5km, it simply doesn't work. I get 20Mbps at the office because it's only 50m to the MDF room.

My overhead lights remote control I used further in the video to turn the lights out.

I put your Federal Election video on the home page of my website. Brilliant stuff, keep it up. You are already helping to change the political landscape of Australia and helping to educate more Australians about technology. More power to the people!

I plan on opening a technology section at the site, and will check out more of your videos, and if you have no objections I will post them on relevant pages at the site.

There are countless important applications were only AUS node to AUS node matters.

Why? It makes the system more democratic because (almost) everyone participates. Lots of things in every society are compulsory.

That sucks. But same here for me at present. I have fibre coming into my lab building, just 50m away, but the only way I can connect to it (except by ADSL2+) is by paying $3K-$8K PER MONTH to get a 10Mbps *Ethernet* line. At home I have no option but cable, but at least I get 100Mbps for $100/month. Upload speed is only 2.4Mbit though.

Dave. I am an consultant electrical engineer working as an NBN designer through my firm. While I agree FTTP is the best 'technical' engineered solution for Australia. A while engineered solution all around does have a financial aspect which is why the coalition have gone for a cheaper option. What the government fails to publicly mention but if found of the website if you dig is that once FTTP was to be completed it would be privatized. Now who do you think would have the money to buy the

In my case, I can't pay extra to get to better upload bandwidth. I would if I could, but there is no option.

Who said vote for the ALP? There are other options. You don't have to vote for the big two parties.

I'm not getting bogged down in the details. There are two options here. Fibre to the home, or no fibre to the home. Fibre to the home is all that matters.

G.Fast requires the copper cabling to be RF shielded to stop the cables from essentially acting as antennas. G.Fast uses frequencies that are used by FM Radio, and as such, would interfere with reception. Australian made fibre is cheaper than imported shielded copper cabling.

Creating and uploading video has been my full time business for over 2 years now.

The NBN will provide a connection to every premises in the country for FREE. The only cost is paying an ISP for the service, which is about the same as ADSL prices now.

93% Fibre to the home, 4% fixed wireless, 3% satellite

1) fiber cable increases the speed at which you can get a stable connection over a given distance by 3-5x(also the 100mbps-50mbps connections that are coming with it are just the begining, it can handle much more in the future).

2) replacing an old rotting copper setup thats over 40 years old with a better version that has better stability over distances at better speeds is not a waste of money. it will cost just as much to do fiber to the nodes

Sure it's behind schedule (what huge infrastructure project isn't), but the NBN is already rolled out in many areas, and many people are reporting they have and it's awesome. You have no valid argument.

Would fiber mean eevblog in 8K video. you can use a imax camera recording onto 70mm film then scan it in at 8192x8192 resolution, with raw uncompressed 7.1 audio

or probably dual 70mm imax and combine the 2, 8k videos into a single 8192x resolution 3D video at 120PS which can then be used with passive and active 3D displays?

I agree that Labour doesn't deserve another chance. But the alternative is just too frightening to comprehend.

Dave, I live in Cedar Rapids Iowa and a wealthy communications
guy here actually pushed his private company to run fiber all the
way to every customer. This was every technie user's dream!
Apparently they had huge problems getting the fiber into homes
without getting kinked at the entry points. Hopefully the technology
for fiber entry into homes has improved, but that company had
to retreat to copper from the pole to the customer.
Has the problem with fiber entry points been overcome?

The NBN won't be sold off to retailers. The plan is to keep the NBN as a wholesale only provider.
It is to be properly regulated to keep that status, the mistakes of the telstra selloff won't be repeated (not separating the wholesale/infrastructure from the retail side) and are well understood.
The FTTN plan isn't that much cheaper and has a running cost (power) associated with the cabinets.
