It's happened to me getting on at an unmanned station and the ticket machine was broken. No conductor came along the train the whole time and got to Glasgow Central with no ticket to get through the barriers and the staff didn't believe me no one came along and issued me with a fine. ScotRail refused my appeal as well...

Because they're too expensive. Trains need to be government run. 1/4th of the money goes to the greedy 1% who run the trains.

Good train fares are an absolute rip off anyway

Maybe if the tickets weren't so ridiculously expensive while the companies make huge profits, less people would do it

If there's no one there at the ticket office then he shouldn't be fined!

Most common fare doging techniques are hiding in toilet hiding under seat hiding under coat or clothes and lying about age.

Sometimes staff don’t bother checking or issuing any tickets, then ugly scenes like this happen! Also, with train fares continuing to rise it’s no wonder people try and pay less or nothing at all.

I think it's out of order how they can give people a fine for not having a ticket but when they strike and leave millions of passengers stranded who have got tickets they couldn't care less, this is why I hardly ever use the trains in England overpriced bad service, most expensive in Europe and increasing

Yes....exactly, this is because rail fares are amongst the most expensive in Europe and keeping increasing well above inflation! How else can the monstrous train driver salaries and their rises be paid for. C'mon... the cost of travelling to London Waterloo is now £12.50.. a 30 min journey. Ridiculous!! Higher prices means basic mobility is unaffordable....causes huge rise in fare dodging.

They were called Stings, were the BTP and train operation staff act as a team, not always like that, after a time, it died out and fare dodging continued.

I would always buy my ticket on the train if I was unable to buy my ticket before boarding the train, for example if I got on the train at the last minute before it left because I arrived at the station late, or if the ticket machine would only accept card payments due to the cash payment not working, and I only wanted to use the money on

Many Dodgers just have £20 in Thier pocket ready to give the Inspectors because they know the likelihood of getting caught is very slim ..
And THAT was from a ticket inspector himself

I don’t pay any National Rail fares unless they’re paid for me. They are not only too expensive but they do not equate to today’s cost of living (2022). However, I always pay TfL fares, they’re cheap, affordable and of a good standard. I dont pay the privatised companies. I wont line their pockets
