A look at Vocabulary from Classical Roots

Looking to add a vocabulary program to your homeschool? We highly recommend Vocabulary from Classical Roots!

Here's what Homeschool Compass team member, Tracy, loves about this program:

- Lessons are straightfoward! My hands-on common sense learner enjoyed the way the material was presented, as well as the black and white sidebar pictures she could color while working. Each lesson is built around a theme, introducing new words with shared Greek or Latin roots. Once your child knows the root, they can apply what they've learned to all kinds of new words.

- It's challenging, but approachable! Lessons include multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and free writing exercises to solidify new material. Short assignments fostered a sense of accomplishment for my daughter.

- It's versatile! Beyond completing the lessons, we use each week's word list for spelling and practice with dictionary skills. Lessons reinforce grammar learning and may spark an interest in ancient languages.

- It's affordable! The books are quite inexpensive. If your child does written work on blank paper, you can reuse the books with multiple students. Use the student book on its own if you're confident in your ability to correct assignments. Otherwise, grab the Answer Key for solutions to assignments or the Teacher's Editions for answers as well as lesson planning help and enrichment activities. If you'd like vocabulary tests created for you, you can also pick up the Blackline Test Book. However you go about it, this program gives you a lot of bang for your buck.

- It's great preparation for standardized tests like the SAT, ACT and CLT! Reading comprehension passages and writing questions often include challenging vocabulary words. Being able to decipher word roots gives your child and advantage.
