Tens Of Thousands of Individuals in One Place

Tens of thousands of pearl octopuses gather in this unique location, freezing in strange poses. This is the largest congregation of octopuses on Earth, and they will spend the next two years in this "octopus garden." None of them will leave, not even to eat. Living on the ocean floor below the twilight zone, where it’s dark and very cold, their eggs would develop too slowly in such low temperatures. To speed up the process, they gather in a slightly warmer area. Warm water breaks through cracks in the ocean floor and heats up underground, reaching around 10°C. This slight warmth is enough to accelerate incubation over two years. During this time, the female octopus cleans her clutch and sprays it with water to supply oxygen. Sadly, by the time the eggs hatch, most of the females have reached the end of their lives.
