2024 KTM 990 Duke Review - Call It The 'Super Duke Lite'

KTM's Duke lineup is filling itself out nicely from top to bottom, and with the 790 Duke returning to the family to occupy the middleweight slot, the new 990 Duke can slot itself into, let's say, the "light heavyweight" category, to borrow from the world of boxing. The goal all along was to move it closer in line to the 1390 Super Duke, and after riding it, we can confirm – it's all business.

I love KTM's and have owned a few, but I'm not going to buy another until there's clear evidence they have much better quality control and real improvements customer support.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but my 2016 1290 superduke makes me happy. All the new models just aren't convincing me I'll have more fun if I swapped out.

About to start watching, I really hope you mentioned the camshaft failures on the 790 and 890 platform. KTM has yet to address this, thousands of bikes with premature cam wear. I would hope that good reviewers would hold their feet to the fire.

Having owned a 2007 Super Duke 990, it kinda makes me sad they didnt go for reviving and improving the LC8 Vtwin 990 for this modern chassis. Mine had 40k miles on it when I sold it in 2022 and it never gave me an issue outside of a water pump seal at 36k.

Personally I would have liked it if KTM held back a little and showed that they fixed all the problems and reliability issues with the 890 lineup, before putting all their energy into making a new bike. Head light looks better than previous, though. They could’ have stopped there.

Nice review. Thank you. As someone with a lot of experience both street riding and a decade of competition racing, yet never ridden the 890 or 1290’s, what would you compare the new 990 to from another manufacturer? As this will be helpful apart from actually riding it.

How are the handling compares to the 890 Duke R or the 1390? You kept mentioned it is a miniature Super Duke but there is no comparison to neither bike except stiffer yet lighter chassis.

How come we can;t see "the lights"? the switch gear backlighting? You talked quitre a bit about it and then never gave us a camera shot of it??? Just fact, it gets mentioned occasionally but nbo one ever shows you exactly what it looks like?

I know that orange is KTM’s colour and I like orange. But why not sell the bike with an option without that specific colour.
I’d guess that you’d sell 15-20% more bikes!
The new 990 Duke would look awesome in black with gold accents 🤙🏾

Not a good looking bike way to expensive especially with the tech pack for a standard model 😢
