4K Walking Tour | PORTUGAL | Holy Monument Christ The King

Relaxing walking tour around the statue of Jesus, "Sanctuary of Christ the King", a national and Catholic monument in Almada, Portugal, providing historical information and context. Located on the Tagus river bank directly across from the city of Lisbon and next to the famous 25 de Abril bridge, Jesus Cristo Rei stands with arms reached out blessing the city of Lisbon, a symbol to the Portuguese of Peace, Love, Gratitude, and Good Fortune for being spared destruction during WWII.

On May 17th, 1959, in front of the image of Our Lady of Fátima, this monument was consecrated and inaugurated in the presence of all the Portuguese Episcopal Priesthood, the Cardinals from Rio de Janeiro and Lourenço Marques (nowadays Maputo), the civil authorities, and 300,000 people. His Holiness the Pope John XXIII marked his presence through a radio message. In the words of Cardinal Cerejeira: "This monument will always be a national sign of gratitude for the gift of Peace".
