Reviews:
"Cameron Mitchell comes to Virginia City in this episode of Bonanza entitled after Lincoln's famous quote from the Bible that A House Divided cannot stand. In this case it's the residence of the Ponderosa that is shaking because of Mitchell's presence.

This is one of the few, maybe the only episode of Bonanza that dealt with the Civil War. As followers of the show know Lorne Greene's three wives hailed from different parts of the country. Pernell Roberts's mother was from New England, Dan Blocker's from the Missouri border state area, and Michael Landon's from New Orleans.

When Mitchell comes to town he accidentally on purpose meets up with Michael Landon and told him that he knew his mother way back when they were living in New Orleans together. Fans of Bonanza also know that to mention the mothers of any of the boys is to strike a vulnerable chord. With Landon in tow and seemingly the Cartwright imprimatur on his actions, Mitchell tries enlisting the Comstock Lode silver mine owners to the Confederate cause.

Of course all this causes discord on the Ponderosa and more I won't go into. Let's say Lorne Greene had his hands full keeping the family together.

Over the years, I have come to appreciate Pernell Roberts as the best “cowboy” actor on Bonanza .

They wanted Pernell in Gunsmoke in 1955 but back then he couldn't ride a horse. He had an audition with John Rich the casting agent, who said he was perfect for the part and was brilliant and he wanted him but the horse riding wasn't there so he didn't get it...The next time he saw Pernell was when they worked on Bonanza by which time he learned how to ride! Just a bit of info for anyone interested.

I inew Pernell back when he was Doing Bonanza and he came home to his Mom and Dad's house in Waycross, Ga. .( My Aunt and Uncle lived acroos the street from them ) He was not a Happy Camper and Didn't hesitate to let me know it. He was very unhappy with the Scripts that were being forced upon him . I believe he was much Happier with the "Trapper John" Scripts ... . RIP .Pernell I miss You Buddy!! Jake

I liked the happy ending with Adam and Little Joe. Ben was very intelligent showing Little Joe what kind of man Frederick Kyle really was.

A terrifically dynamic and emotional episode. As a boy, this series captivated me and the whole family. It was unquestionably SUNDAY NIGHT. What a wonderful thing these episodes have made it to YouTube, where I can view them through adult eyes.

38:00 minute mark - Adam : " New England ought to be mighty pretty this time of year - I think I'd like to see it again !! " So - I think I'll just ride for many weeks or months on end, to get there...LOL

@37:37 I have never seen Adam so emotional before. Has ever acted like this in any other episode?

Something good to remember. A house divided can not stand. Never be willing to sacrifice family and friends. Money is only money. Great episode. I can relate to this. My family tree fell to the ground. Don't let it happen to your family. Family should mean everything. God's purpose for creating all of us humans.

A really great episode. Well written. The Civil War was about 100 years old at the time of this airing. Some people's grandparents would have been talking about it as firsthand experiences.
