How to Learn English with Movies (New Technique)

In this video, I talk about how you can learn English through movies using my special technique. This technique will let you improve your English listening and vocabulary while having fun at the same time. This is probably the most fun way to learn English.

=== How can I read subtitles quickly? ===

Read only the words you couldn't make out. Don't read every single word from left to right.

What I like to do is scan the subtitles quickly for key information. It’s a bit hard to explain, but what I mean is to quickly look at the words on the screen and let your brain recognize the most important words. Usually, you just need to see 4 words out of 7 to understand the meaning of the sentence.

With this approach, you’ll be able to read the subtitles in a lot less time. It’s a little hard to do at first, but once you get past the learning curve, reading subtitles this way will become second nature.

Also, you can completely ignore the subtitles during moments when the dialogue isn't important.

=== How to delay the subtitles in a movie? ===

If the movie file is on your computer, use a media player called VLC. Delay the subtitles by pressing the H key on your keyboard. Each press will delay the subtitles by 50 milliseconds. So, to delay the subtitles for 2 seconds, press the H key 20 times.

I don't know a way to delay subtitles on streaming platforms like Netflix, unfortunately.

=== Isn't it more effective to watch a movie twice, with subtitles and then without? ===

Yes, I do believe that approach is more effective than the one in the video, but I personally don't do that because it's too boring.

I like the idea of delaying subtitles. I'm a native English speaker but I watched this because I've been learning German for a few years and I just started learning Spanish. German speakers and especially Spanish speakers talk a lot (I mean A LOT) faster than most English speakers. So I like hearing any and all language learning tips. Thanks for sharing this video! :)

Many friends of mine have told me they´ve learned English through watching movies. At first they watch it with subtitles in their native language and then the second time with English subtitles. This isn´t something they always do but they end up grasping words and this helps them practice their listening skills. Also, by watching movies it provides the learner with more realistic forms of structuring sentences. Apart from this it is very entertaining for the student to watch some of their favorite actors in movies while they are practicing their listening skills. There comes a point where they may forget they are learning and just enjoy it.

Interesting. I think watching movies is a great way for English learners to pick up new language. This is a good idea for getting more out of the movie than just watching regularly with subtitles.
