We’ve been living totally off grid on solar for almost two years. I remember our original modest solar setup. We had the same two renogy panels/charge controller and two deep cycle batteries from walmart. The inverter was all and cheap too. Now we have twelve 36 volt panels, eight 368ah batteries, a 4400 watt inverter/charger, and a 100 amp charge controller capable of handling 6600 watts. It was worth the upgrade. We’ll never need the grid now.

Now you've got me wanting to live in a yurt. Your points about economic freedom and small environmental footprint are very important to me. Because of you and other homesteaders I am back to gardening and spending as much time as possible outdoors. Thanks for the videos. I love watching.

I love how nic looks at you jake when things are being disgussed, she relys on you for imput, shes like a sponge for information.. and accepts and values your input. You do the same when shes talking..

Thank you so much for the yurt and solar information. Saying all in an easy to understand manner.. we have an off grid ‘camp’ and I love the newer solar information… it’s changed so much!! When I last looked into it (20 years ago!) Our neighbor at our camp on an island had to have several panels and a wall of batteries with a lot of wires and it just wasn’t efficient. Also the lightweight panels at the time took days of full sun to charge a battery .. they were using lights, a radio, perhaps an odd small gadget. But it just was always a struggle. Today is so much more efficient and easier judging by what you have!!

Thank you again.

Amazing that you are able to hear all the wild life from within your Yurt. That reminds me of a nice First Nation Proverb "When a pine needle falls in the forest, the eagle sees it; the deer hears it, and the bear smells it."

I am watching your videos from Owosso, MI. We are pretty much smack dab in the middle of the mitten. I have never lived in a yurt, but my sister and her husband have a yurt in the forest outside of Port Townsend, WA. We also have a friend who has a yurt in New Mexico. You’ve listed lots of great reasons to enjoy yurt life. Looks like you are not afraid of hard work. How cool is it that you can be such a close part of nature? I have spent lots of years gardening and preserving food via dehydration, hot water bath canning and pickling. It is so rewarding to put your energy into growing food, I feel like I put lots of love into it, and it tastes so much better, because I know exactly what went into it. My husband and I love the idea of creating things from nature. We respect nature and are thankful for all of the blessings she bestows upon us. I hope you continue to learn and experience nature’s bounty. Some people need to be around people and live in the city, but I have never found comfort in that. I love living the rural life, although we are not off grid like you, nor are we really all that rural. Enjoy this all for as long as you can. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Give those beautiful kitties a cuddle from me...😻

Everyone needs a storage shed to store winter needs. Let's face it things and stuff just build up no matter how hard we try to reduce

I like the solid windows in your yurt. Its more like a fancy tent without the plumbing and electrical.

i think the mirror behind you look like art. From our view we can see the dome and some of the roof support.

It’s so cool watching your journey. We have been off grid 6yrs and love it. We too started with a very small system and now a much bigger one. It’s amazing to see how much you can live without regarding power!

God Bless you both, a tracker for those panels will get you 40% more power. wrapping the bottom of the yurt will keep you warmer. Keep up the great work !

My octagon house had the "sun rays" and a dome shape in the center. I always wished it was a dome skylight and would imagine it being so. That was my favorite space ever. Everything about that house was magical. Your new babies remind me so much of my sweet Spaz who passed away suddenly this weekend. My home is not the same without her 😭Love to see the progress you're making, and lookin forward to what is to come.

18:00, You are correct about going solar. If you had enough panels you could light up your Yurt, power a refrigerator and more. There are so many videos on Youtube of all kinds of solar setups and so much free info in the videos as well. Using an inverter is just one way to utilize the solar-charged batteries. There are so many 12 volt powered small appliances that are geared for campers that would work great in a Yurt or any off-grid structure.

Love how you use belts for the starter systems of solar power 🙌🏽

Jake, when you were talking about the expense of hooking up to the electric company, you failed to mention that after you spend that money, nothing of it belongs to you. it will belong to the electric company. Going solar makes so much more sense. good luck

Hi Jake "solar white belt", I'm a brown belt., don't waste you money buying basic solar system kits. Most important : location, location, location and short cable runs to your yurt...start with four 100aH li-on battery with temperature sensors "no lead", please ...than "two" separate 30a controllers each connected in parallel. need minimum of four- 235w panels in parallel " point two in morning sun and two in afternoon direction" also kept your panel clean!!!. use 12 volt fixtures or 110v if needed buy 3000 watts sine wave.
this will earn you a blue belt. FYI brown belt are 24 volt systems

I love that you are going totally solar. I absolutely think it will work. I lived on Vancouver Island for 3 and a half years and I believe there is definitely enough sunlight to do this. Good on you, I am in full support and encourage you wholeheartedly. Good luck!
