In this knowledge pill video, architect engineer and designer Mais Taha from MTiPX, discusses the wide range of applications of IoT in tourism. Designing an IoT solution for the tourism SMEs involves creating innovative and engaging experiences for tourists while optimising operations.

When embarking on the journey of building an IoT experience, SMEs must choose 1 of 3 directions:
1. The local cultural activities and sites (in Malta for instance, these include village feasts in summertime and historical sites and attractions such as Ġgantija Temples and Comino)
2. The technology which in tourism includes Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR)
3. Global business ideas that need integration

Some examples of IoT applications are:

• The utilisation IoT can create engaging and personalised experiences. Consumers are always influenced by a service that is tailored towards their specific needs, as exemplified by the "Little Chef" show.
• IoT offers financial benefits through reduced energy use and costs. In hotels, for instance, internet-enabled devices and sensors adjust the room temperature continually so that heating is only used when needed. In one project, MTiPX focused on waste prevention strategies within hotels; this not only reduced costs, but also diminished the environmental impact associated with material transportation.
• IoT devices for real-time information and assistance can help SMEs enhance their services based on live data. As IoT collects data in real-time, it is also used to enhance the travel experience by giving various suggestions and helping travellers out with most of their specific requests. Technologies like near-field communication (NFC) can facilitate easy access to local services and discounts.
• IoT also enhances security in tourism. Robust security measures should be in place to protect tourist data and privacy, including data encryption between IoT devices and central systems. Compliance with tourist data protection regulations is imperative, along with seamless integration with local businesses and services.

Tourism SMEs should opt for IoT devices that are most appropriate for specific scenarios:

• For smart hotels, this might entail keyless entry systems, occupancy sensors, and climate control.
• In transportation, considerations could involve GPS tracking, NFC for ticketing, and passenger counting sensors.
• Attractions may benefit from interactive displays, beacons, and VR, AR, or MR devices.
• Restaurants can employ the IoT to improve the overall customer experience; for example, when supported by an online ordering app, a restaurant can receive orders ahead of time and control table occupancy more efficiently.

In 2023, IoT emerges as a pivotal tech trend for tourism SMEs. IoT incorporates internet connectivity into devices, fostering seamless communication. This yields numerous advantages for tourism businesses, encompassing the delivery of exceptional customer experiences and optimising day-to-day internal processes.
