The shemagh, keffiyeh or ghutrah is a large cotton scarf that has many uses. It is traditionally used as a head wrap to block wind, sun, cold, blowing dirt and sand and other elements. It can also be used to collect water, help start a fire, as a medical tool, and so much more. In this video, Ruben uses the art of Furoshiki to transform it into a a satchel or haversack.

Ruben is a graduate of our 50 Day Advanced Woodsman class and an apprentice for The Survival University and Colorado Mountain Man Survival. I hope you enjoy his first video!

I’ve been on a bicycle tour for about 2.5 months and used this a lot. Mostly as a casual stylish sling bag when I’m in towns and cities, big enough to carry groceries and one time when I wanted to go for multi day hike but did not have enough storage on my existing backpack, this became my emergency storage “extender”. Will never travel without one of these ever again
