Well said.. I spend 60mins of my practice time going over licks over 1 - 2 standards...play them over and over again...memorize them and then combine the lines to make them fluent

I honestly always assumed that real musicians picked up new ideas very quickly, and I’d get frustrated if I didn’t. Hearing you say it’s okay to take longer than a week to internalize something is actually quite a relief

I remember someone at Berklee saying that it took 9 months for something that they worked on to show up in their playing.

I agree with you. I generally pick up ideas quickly, but I've dedicated a ton of time to focus. What once took me an hour now takes anywhere from 5-20 minutes. I play several times throughout the day, each session ranging from 5-20mins, I haven't had burnout in over a year because I learned to focus. Even though these timeframes happen to be how long each session is for me, I don't attach progress to timeframes. I don't entertain my mind with expectations, which also skyrockets my practice. I believe the combination of consistency and focus have the power to transform you most effectively.
