Totally get you! I study Classics at University - it's been 8 years now that I study Latin and Greek, they have been for me an anchor through everything. I discovered these passions at high school, but it's never too late for people to start! And also thank you because what you are doing is really important in our world, young people now really need to take it over

This is fantastic! Thank you for making it. I am going to share with my students now! It's so nice to hear someone share meaningful reasons to study ancient languages, instead of the same old tired "it will help your verbal SAT, blah, blah, blah"

Hey, I'm Greek and is really nice to meet people like you, because you understand why you learn something, in Greek every single world have meaning for example Φιλοξενία is coming from "Φιλώ" in old Greek mean Αγαπώ=I love and the second part is coming from "ξένος" that's mean and today in Greek = stranger, so something if you don't know it and this helpful because you want to learn remember every word in Greek have 2-3 or 4 different words inside that's why the most of the words is coming from Greek, because everything is for a reason like the word philanthropy is coming from the word Φιλάνθρωποι is exactly same accent and means is coming from "Φίλοι" =Friends and "Άνθρωποι" = humans

Keep going you learn the old Greek but is very good to learn the new Greek and very helpful to understand why you saying every word and what exactly that's mean...you saying a lot of words in English but we don't know from where they are coming what exactly is the meaning of the words! :))

Congratulations!! I studied at a Jesuit school in Arequipa (Peru) and I remember the Latin Mass and the Greek roots of the Spanish language. To study law you have to know Roman Law in Latin and I have acquaintances who learned Greek for the pleasure of reading the classics in their original language.

I'm studying Ancient Greek on my own. I'm going through the textbook, Athenaze. I read portions of the New Testament, Septuagint, Greek Church Fathers, and some classical authors.

Whenever someone asks me why I like studying Latin or ancient Greek, I answer with another very simple question: Why do we study history? And the answer is that we study the past to comprehend the present. The past is rich and it gave us the basis on whitch our modern society is based on. It's not impossible to understand modern societies and their ways of living without knowing the past, but it's a lot easier if you do, and the same logic applies for ancient languages. If I don't understand latin, for exemple, it's way harder to understand and learn a complex modern language that derives from it, like portuguese or french.

Hello! I’m going to study Classics in uni this year and I am not sure if I should study Ancient Greek or Latin (I have to choose one). I haven’t studied either of them to A level so it will be new to me. I heard that you should learn Latin first as it is less complex than Greek (but still difficult!) but I’m more interested in Ancient Greek culture and literature so I think Greek would be better? But I am still unsure as I don’t know if I will be able to comprehend Ancient Greek since it is so difficult. Please help! Also, this was a really interesting video 💜

As a Canadian Lebanese, I want to learn Phoenician as well as the ancient Greek. As a Sicilian, I'm sure you know the impacts both those cultures had on the Mediterranean.

I read all of the classics in translation when I was younger and I want to learn to read them in the original Greek or Latin now. I have been attempting to self learn both. Do you have any tips or resources that you recommend?

What does μονογενής mean? Some people think it means "only begotten" and some people think that it means "one-of-a-kind." There are some who argue that in the New Testament, Isaac is called Abraham's μονογενής, but Isaac is not the only offspring that Abraham had. Hence, μονογενής should be taken to mean "one-of-a-kind." What do you think of this? Could the word have either meaning depending on the context?

1. The first and still the best book ever is the Iliad. It is twice as good if you read this epic poem in the Heroic Greek original. Read the first descriptions of magic wands, intelligent robots, sports betting, and more!
2. The New Testament is written in Koine Greek. Tease your fundamentalist friends about being too lazy to learn the language of God.
3. Plato wrote some of the most amazing sentences ever. And he wrote them in Classic Greek.
4. The Classic Greeks invented history, theater, philosophy, much mathematics, science, politics, and more. Much of it is state-of-the-art. You owe it to yourself to read a bunch.
5. Greek is the most beautiful and complex of all languages. It developed fully before the Greeks even had an alphabet or writing. What are you waiting for?
6. Heroic, Classic, and Koine Greek are quite similar. It's a remarkably stable language over the centuries.
7. The Romans highly regarded the Greeks. They adopted much of the literature, architecture and sculpture.
8. Even little Greek children and blind poets can learn the language--you have no excuse!

I agree with everything you said! It is worth mentioning that ancient and modern Greek are very similar (even after thousands of years) and studying ancient Greek can help you learn modern Greek as well :)

I just heard some schools are banning the requirement for a classics major as racist. I guess they will substitute the 1990s TV series Hurcules and Xena Warrior Princess.
