I this video you can see a timeline history of the top 20 most popular baby boy names from 1880 to 2020.

If you look back at baby names over the past few decades, the rule of thumb used to be that boy names were relatively stable.

According to the SSA — which keeps track of most popular baby boy names, going back to the late 1880 - The most popular boy's name in the country from 1954 to 1998 was Michael (In 1960 David took the top spot for only a year) and from 1999 the most popular baby boy name was Jacob from 1999 to 2012.

The SSA reveals that these are the current most popular names for boys (from the year 2018, the most recent year available).
