I think the tragic aspect of Anakin is that he was always a slave from birth to the final moments near his death. A slave to Watto, then the Jedi, then Palpatine, and always enslaved to his darkest emotions, specially pain and anger.
Only when he decides to save the only person who still loved and believed in him despite his past, did he got to enjoy the freedom he always wanted. In that way, Luke saved him from himself.
