That one guy who trains exclusively with weighted giant swords is coming for you.

Reminds me of that guy who made his own "Dragonslayer Sword" and keeps claiming he can use it practically but all of his "swings" are, like you say here, basically just picking it up and dropping it and then slowly picking it back up.

Like sure, you might break through someone's guard and make them have a bad time, but if you miss, they move back slightly, or they have friends you're fucked

Thats actually a good insult to say to someone " you're not wielding a sword you're dropping something heavy"

So you're telliing me that you need something that is too big to be called a sword... Massive, thick, heavy, and far too rough. Something like a heap of raw iron

It’s funny how Guts is portrayed as a yolked dude who uses his superhuman will to carry a giant sword, meanwhile in JRPG’s twinks like Cloud can swing those things around like they’re marshmallows 😂

I am so glad you guys covered this topic because I had an argument 2 years ago on the internet with someone who claimed to do HEMA and they acted like I'm an idiot for saying a zweihander wouldn't be able to smash through an arming sword parry.

aw was hoping for more explanation things like swords vs non sword weapons, would a mace break through a parry? idk i thought it would be interesting

Skallagrim did an experiment about this with heavy quarterstaff 7 years ago. While blowing through a well structured guard with a sword likely not possible, I think you might be able to do it with a halberd, dane axe or some other top heavy weapon. The swordsman likely needs to augment their defense with evasive footwork, which is often good idea anyway.

Been sayin this shit for years!! 😂😂
I laugh so hard when I see those videos of someone lugging around a steel paddle like "No one can stop my Exterminatus Extremeus Giant Killer Compensator." while swinging it with the speed of a rusted gate.

Its like,
A) it weighs 20lbs. That can still be blocked by something like a montante or claymore.
B) It doesnt have to blocked. Just side stepped leisurely before a reposte.

Some important details on melee combat limits of the human body -- the longer the weapon the more strength is required, the more end-weighted the weapon the more strength is required, and of course the more mass in the weapon the more strength is required. Exceed the limit if the human body, and swinging the weapon fast enough to fight with it will rip the arm apart at the shoulder.

For a sword, the limit is roughly 18 lbs on a 6ft weapon (blade + grip). Go over that, and even if you can swing the weapon you can no longer maintain good footwork or defend yourself. It doesnt matter how strong you are past an 18 lb sword, as the human shoulder can no longer handle the stress and the mass will pull you off balance during a swing.

End-heavy weapons, such as a halberd, must be choked up on during anything but a deathblow swing to finish off a now noncombatant foe. They cannot be as heavy as 18 lbs before becoming impossible to use effectively.

I have seen the 50 lb buster sword guys. It's impressive, what they do. It's also ridiculously slow, from a combat standpoint. There is more than enough time to calmly step forward between swings, kill them with a faster light weapon in one unopposed stroke/thrust, and step back out again to safety. They would have a better and better chance as they make their sword lighter.

No matter how impractical, i still really wanna see someone try to develop a martial art around weilding heavier than normal weapons, i imagine itd look similar to greatsword crowd control techniques. There's gotta be a nerd out there determined enough to try to make it work.

I was actually thinking that in the other video

"You may as well use a log at that point"

I think there's actually a manga where a guy is just too strong to use a sword because he keeps breaking them so he just carries a log around and bashes people with it.

I just read a comment on another video that said. "Hema is just larp"😭

Obviously this isn't sword fighting but you could also just use an Axe or Hammer or Mace. Especially if its a two hander
