I am currently a Drill Sergeant on the trail right now. Basic training is different than when I went in. However, a lot of Drill sergeants make it as close to their basic training as possible. It is not uncommon to do 100 to 300 push-ups a day for the first, two weeks you are there. Understand that you're gonna get messed up because nobody is perfect. It's mostly the fear of the unknown so the first three weeks has a high emphasis on Drill in ceremony customs, and curtesies, discipline, history of the army, instilling, values and morals, learning the soldiers, Creed, and physical fitness.

Weeks four through seven is all rifle marksmanship oriented. There will be long hours in the classroom and tons of boring things that you do all day in order to qualify on iron sites and CCO by the end. They will scare you by saying if you do not qualify, you will fail basic training however if you can, hit every target from 150 m in you will qualify almost sharpshooter. This phase, you will not get messed up as long as you do things fast efficiently stay focused and motivated, and this phase can be super easy. If all you guys do well and this phase can be very long and drawn out if you guys are terrible.
The last phase of basic training is all movement oriented. You will do your long rocks, you will do, buddy team live fire. You will do the night infiltration course and other memorable basic training events. All of the smokings have subsided significantly and your Drill Sergeant by this point just want you to leave. You guys will only get messed up if you get a new Drill Sergeant in your platoon or if you start screwing up and regressing in your training when it comes to discipline and adhering to standards. You will most likely get your phone around this phase up to one hour on Sunday, and use that time to make family arrangements with them coming to your graduation. Don't buy things online because you will have to transport that out of there and you have very limited room in your bags.

I hope this reaches a few people! I do well replying to comments so if you have any questions, please ask.

No matter the generation, just remember the following. Maybe a million soldiers have survived it through the decades. It’ll suck, but a good meal and sleep may make it a bit brighter tomorrow.

Basic Training is easy if you go at it like Forrest Gump and do what you are told and keep your mouth shut and remember, the worse things are today, the better war stories you will have tomorrow.

I am 37yrs and shipping on October 8th. I am feeling a little nervous but happy to go through this process especially at this age. Been battling with weight loss and feel this is what I need to get back to that disciplined. I left a 250k job just to go through this so yeah from super being comfortable to handling pressure which I feel i really need right now in my life before i turn 40.

My tip, I went through Infantry School at then Ft Benning in 2008: It's going to be alright. The whole thing is designed to take you from 0 to being a functional soldier in a few weeks. Drill Sgt's will be happy to answer any question, they want you to learn. Be humble, and really, just follow the instructions. It's a good experience

As long as you accept it for what it is and don't give up, you'll be set. Just do what the drills tell you to do. If you still don't know, ask your battle buddies or just do what everyone else is doing.

I went to basic in the 70's. Some parts sucked, especially the 1st few days. I went at a good time of year (End of September) so I was not dealing with oppressive heat. Just remember that everyone's goal is for you to succeed. Millions of people have gone before you. It is meant to be challenging!
You will finish each day tired as you can be and sleep will come easy. The food may not taste great all the time but it is edible and plenty. You will not have any real privacy, but that is OK everyone with you are in the same boat. You will get into shaped and will lose (or in some instances gain) weight.
Yes some of us say that basic was harder in our day. That may or may not be true.
Remember your job in basic more than anything else is to learn how to be a soldier, fire weapons, and get physically fit.

If you’re scared you should be!!! Hahaha
J.k just keep your mouth closed and your ears open and go in with a learning mindset and you’ll be fine. Just don’t give up when you don’t understand it.

As someone who went last year. Those 2 1/2 months feel so slow while you're there. Once you leave, those months go by so fast. Since then I completed 22 weeks of ait and airborne school. You realize how easy the army is once you're at your unit.

It's easy, just got to my first duties station, the hardest part was the first 72 hours after that easy work

My advice: Just worry about the task at hand. Don't worry about what's coming up. It all comes together in time.

I went through basic training at Ft Jackson SC in 1985, and it is WAY different! Females back then didn’t train in pugel sticks or hand to hand combat, and we didn’t have simulators. I was definitely a Private Benjamin type, and I was terrified of my drill sergeants. I was home sick for the first few weeks and did a lot of crying and wanting to go home. Victory Tower was the most terrifying thing that I had ever done in my life!!! But I did it. I think I started to “enjoy” it during 2nd phase, and I qualified as an expert marksman. The field exercises sucked because as a girl, I hated getting dirty and the Drill Sergeants LOVED telling us stories about rattlesnakes climbing into sleeping bags. I did something that, eight weeks prior, I didn’t think that I would. I graduated. I went on to serve 12 years, and I think back on that time fondly. Yes, it was hard. The Drill Sergeants yelled a lot, but they were fair and motivated to help us. I’m a RN now, and I think that the discipline that I developed in BT helped me get through nursing school. It’s hard, but push through the difficult times. Army life is great. Good luck.

If your going in as 11B basic is like summer camp. Even if your out of shape it’s easy. When I got to my regular unit (peace time) that’s when it really sucked for about 6 months. After those six you’ll be as hard as a brick though. I went from 15.5 two miles to 11.2 two miles. If you don’t max your PT test you failed it. How far over max you can go is what they want. And they get it.
This was late 90s though, I hear it’s all cake now

I went at 39 years of age. My age was the issues but my mindset was focused on passing and getting through. You won't fail if you just do what your told to do.

Bro it’s so easy. Also pro tip to making friends in BCT, just scream “lock it up!” whenever your platoon gets a little to rowdy, everyone will know that you are a disciplined drill private and give you the respect you deserve. Hope this helps.
