Great advice Brian. After renting for 40 years my wife and I bought a 1.5 acre parcel of land to finally build a home of our own and end our slavery to the "landlord". A mortgage was not in the cards for us. In my mind borrowing from a bank was almost the same thing. So 7 years ago we started our journey. The property is 750 miles away so we made the decision to go 2 times a year for 2-4 weeks each time. It is now year 7 of a 5 year "plan". The plan has changed to a schedule that gives us total freedom to focus on just what we can do each time. I never have an expectation of the outcome but just accept whatever we are able to do in the time we have. There is no "deadline". Instead of crushing us with how much more we have to do we just continue striving for the Holy Grail of "debt-free living" Slowly but surelywe are building an incredible Timber Frame mountain lodge style cabin which is only 640 sq. ft. but it is a thing of beauty. My last and final work of art. A legacy to my children of a place of sanctuary, refuge and safety. AT age 67 I could die tomorrow or I could live another 20 years. Who knows. It doesn't matter. I will die a happy man even if I never finish the cabin. My family will finish it in my absence and will remember me with fondness and love. “When we build, let us think that we build forever. Let it not be for present delight nor for present use alone. Let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for; and let us think, as we lay stone on stone, that a time is to come when those stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say, as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, 'See! This our fathers did for us.”
